How to prepare for Dodentocht?

First training session tomorrow for WARMA, maybe Dodentocht again.

Chill 21km to get the dust off my walking boots.

Update: what was meant to be a chill 20km warm up to the proper training turned into wading through knee deep water along flooded canal paths.

We were less than 100metres away from the pub (end goal) before calling ENDEX as we couldnā€™t see where the flooded path edge ended and canal started + sun was setting.

Well done, but I do recognise where that is and think it was an interesting choice to go out on those routes given the past few days.

Iā€™m quite surprised your walk didnā€™t turn into a swim!

Good effort. I certainly wouldnā€™t be wading through knee deep flood water! I hope that wasnā€™t with cadetsā€¦

Yeah, it definitely wasnā€™t the best of ideas in hindsight. The route I took was completely clear besides the occasion large puddle so incorrectly assumed all was fine along the entire canal as we were walking with increasing elevation.

Was absolute carnage for the last 2km before turning back. Sunken boats, broken trees etc.

Nope, just me and the partner.

Good plan, send them in first to find any deep spots

I think youā€™d probably need a good couple of weeks of dry weather, including further upstream, before trying that route again.

I bet itā€™s fantastic in the summer though.

Soā€¦

Does anyone have any training plans for turning a marathon into a full 100k within 3 months?

Iā€™m starting to fancy being one of the 7am finishersā€¦

Iā€™m starting relatively gently with 20km walked a fortnight ago and increasing by 5km every two weeks until the event.

Planning to do RAFWARMA for sure and maybe Dodentocht.

Just make sure youre at the front of the starting pack - might mean checking in at 5-6pm though :joy:

I was only a few rows back from the start last year!

But yes, I think I did check-in at 6pmā€¦

Dear lord - that sounds likeā€¦ and I can barely bring myself to type itā€¦. ā€œRunningā€¦!!??!!??ā€

People who run Dodentocht scare me. If theyā€™re willing to do that to themselves, what else are they capable of?

One of the greatest oxymorons ever - ā€œfun runā€

Well, I need to do better than last year. Didnā€™t even run 10k of itā€¦

Friends suggested running the first 5k to get ahead of the horde at the startā€¦

I warned them, ā€œany more talk of running and we canā€™t be friendsā€¦ā€

Theyā€™re not wrong though.

I did this last year and by the sports centre I was 4 hours ahead of where I had been the year before. It makes a massive difference.

100% its what i try to do - the crowds for the first 10k are brutal!

Maybe I got lucky when I did it back in 2022, but I found the pace of the crowd for 90% of the first 20km to be quite fast. Definitely kept me walking at a quite decent pace.

I also realised Iā€™m quite competitive. Iā€™d overtake people and then would stay in front of them for the remainder of the event. :joy: The last leg to the finish line was my fastest leg at something like 6.5km/h.
