Hexamine

Supposing someone still had some of this, how would they dispose of it?

I would use fire

I haven’t looked specifically at Hexi, but with EPP and (chemicals on the) Offensive Weapons lists, there can be a range of limitations for licensing and/or justified quantities/uses.

As a regulated substance , at the very least it will be illegal without an EPP license, but that doesn’t make the product outright illegal in the UK.

I would imagine that unless misused, a small amount currently in possession might not see prosecution with a “it’s old stock that I use for camping/starting small campfires/bonfires”, but just don’t try to sell it or give it to anyone because you’re then hitting the supplying side of EPP which is serious.

I’ll admit my knowledge isn’t deep on those two acts, because I tend to focus my attention only on a few items that are business-relevant that have been on there longer.

Sulphuric acid, for instance, is restricted for sale at 15% and above, but not below the threshold.

Hydrogen Peroxide is on the EPP list as regulated at and above 12%, requiring a license to purchase.

When those were added (18/19), I don’t recall any need for disposal or backdated reporting, but I could be wrong.

Guarantee you lost Coppers wouldn’t know either!

Tbh it probably would be a trading standards audit that catches a business in the beginning. Probably direct report for an individual by someone who knows or believes something is wrong or suspicious.

Likely escalation to some home office department?

Anyway, without condoning illegal possession of illegal, regulated, or restricted/reportable items, it’s highly unlikely that anyone is getting clobbered for a box or two of hexi in their garage - unless it catches fire and burns down the street.

You’ve got to find some that lights, and isn’t soaking wet first…

Yeah I’m sure the CT types will be well aware, it’s one of those things if they find it that’s what they were looking for.

Someone i know has a significant amount of Hexamine… anyome know if there is a volume limit?

Looking at the Gov.UK site, it would suggest there is no volume limit and possession of hexamine is a criminal offence.

So this is illegal?

And ask the hexamine that we all have kicking about in stores is also now illegal?

Silly question maybe, but is hexamine as we know it the same as the hexamine that’s been made illegal?

it would seem so, yes, since I guess they have no process in place to first check for a Explosives Precursors and Poisons (EPP) licence and photo ID.

Yes, that’s what the legislation says.

Does the MoD have a service-wide exemption? Or do we have our own EPP licence? If not, why has no one said anything :sob:

The MoD, or rather the Transport of Dangerous Goods Working Group, just a month or two ago banned Hexamine for the whole of MoD. I’m trying to get something that formally says that atm.

The MOD probably thinks it’s disposed of it all without considering that OC 1234 Squadron has a couple of boxes in his shed at home to avoid needed a storage solution and risk assessment at the Squadron.

Not just the shed at home, but I know of at least one Squadron that has some in their stores, ignorant of this change.

I get that the thinking is probably along the lines of “It’s not been issued for ages, and shouldn’t be stored on Squadron anyway”. But I’d guess that there are loads of Squadrons that have a few boxes of the stuff kicking around. And plenty of staff and ex cadets that have some in their garage/shed!

If a Squadron or individual happens to have a decent amount kicking about, what’s the process to get rid? Bonfire?..

Found some in an ammo tin at a local squadron fairly recently.
Unsure if it’s been disposed of.

Also is all ‘hexi’ hexi?

I know the MOD packeted stuff is but I’ve seen civilian branded solid fuel tablets, we’ve had Gelert/Yellowstone ones in the past (used up long ago - we were all Dragon before lock down.). I have no idea if it is hexi or an alternative formula.

There’s also the tablets that model steam engine enthusiasts use to power their kit. Esbitt I think (German).

I have seen a couple of the reputable online surplus places advertising non MOD hexi and requiring the EPP before they will ship.

They’ve been affected too…
