'Get Into' Guides

To help expand my knowledge of the ACO, I’m researching a different activity each month and using the opportunity to make a staff development guide as I go along.

About half way through each month, I’ll post the guide on the forums and people can point out inaccuracies and suggest improvements. You don’t need to sign in to anything to add a comment. Just highlight the relevant bit on the document, right-click on it and choose ‘Comment’. Other people can see, and reply to, your comments.

At the end of the month, the guide will be ‘locked’ until it is reviewed next year. Major developments may prompt an earlier review.

The level of depth I’m aiming for will be understood by staff new to the organization, and will also help experienced personnel keep up-to-date on developments in the field. Official policy will be referenced (not reproduced).

For those who are interested, this month’s guide has been finished and finalised.

Topic for May: Fieldcraft.

Nice Jacques! Could it be useful to put in more info about how to actually get on the courses though, and a bit about what you need to know first?

Good stuff!

Must have missed a link somewhere, but how do I access the latest guide?

In the original post, click on the index for shooting.

You could use this as a reference, which some friendly Shooting Officer created

Gaining Shooting Qualifications

That’s a great guide Lee! It goes well with what Jacques and Redowling have produced above!

Thanks a lot for the feedback. At the moment, these guides are intended to be an accessible starting point for further research.

It would be very difficult to include the myriad of local restrictions and processes, which I think are best left to wing staff officers.

Shooting isn’t so bad, but activities like fieldcraft are much worse for this.

Thanks for the link, Leeroy. It would be good if all WSOs Shooting were as proactive as GM Wing’s

Jacques,

how about publishing these on the ACC main site when you’re happy with them?
or upload them to the ACC library?

cheers

I will definitely do that, although when I try it says that I don’t have authorization to submit files.

Good work on the guides, would love a copy of the fieldcraft one if possible

The fieldcraft guide will be finished around the end of this month, but a draft version will probably be published around the 20th for comments and amendments.

Both of these events will be announced on this thread

Cheers, I’ll keep my eyes on the forum

Apologies to all for the delay. I’ve had a ridiculously busy few months.

I present for your consideration [strike]the draft version of[/strike] Get Into Fieldcraft.

Amendments, comments and suggestions welcomed here or on the document itself.

Many thanks.

After another long delay, here’s the next instalment!

April 2014: Get Into First Aid (DRAFT)

All feedback appreciated, thanks.

I think I’ll do radio and the communicator badge next.

We don’t have any particular links with St Andrew Ambulance up here in Scotland - we use the same SJA-related process as those in england.

I think Heartstart takes slightly longer than 2 hours to do. I don’t have my instructor guide with me and we take longer than that anyway, but I thought the minimum was a bit longer.

Also, is there a way of giving the newsleter a theme, linking it back to ACC (if you’re happy with that?)

HeartStart is designed to be2hrs, but I generally do it over 2 parade nights.
