'Get Into' Guides

We’ve been doing that recently - 2 hours is a push!

Yeah it’s more than easily done over 2 parade nights, as opposed to 2 hours. Also it gives the cadets enough time for plenty of practical work and practice. I think with some cadets, especially those new to HeartStart and first aid would struggle to get it done in 2 hours.

Heartstart is 4 x 30minute lessons…as such easily done in over two nights

Thanks for all the comments about Heartstart. I’ve re-worded the sentence as follows:
“It can be delivered in a minimum of 2 hours, but is usually delivered over two parade nights to give participants time to practice.”

I’ve also removed the reference to St Andrew’s (I assume ACTO 8 is not quite right then?)

Something I thought might be questioned is “AFA holders can provide the minimum permitted level of first aid cover for most cadet activities”. I know that’s correct for shooting (PAM 21C refers), and for all other activities, JSP 535 Part II says:
0108. Recognised first aid certificates of at least 16 contact hours training are listed
below. They are current when the holder has either qualified or re-qualified within the
previous three years:

a. All HSE approved full First Aid at Work certificates (including the First
Aid at Work HSE certificates of the voluntary aid societies).
b. British Red Cross Standard or Practical First Aid certificates.
c. St Andrew’s First Aid Standard Certificate.
d. St John Ambulance Activity First Aid Certificate
However, I know that we are invited to a number of community events specifically for our YFA holders to provide first aid cover to meet the conditions of the organisers’ insurance.

Am I right in thinking that an AFA holder is needed to cover the cadets, but that YFA holders can cover the general public (as long as the organiser is satisfied with this level of training)?

Also, pEp, you’ve got mail.

ive never heard of YFA counting as cover, i always see it as someone competent to conduct FA should the need arise. if i had the numbers id look for one FA badge in each flight/detail/sub-group on events

I suspect you may be on a sticky wicket with regards insurance using cadets as first aid cover for community events! You can treat the general public in the case of an emergency, and you can get qualified to cover your own cadets at your own events, but I’m pretty sure that event organisers bringing you in to provide first aid cover is a whole different ball game!

Hm, thanks for that. I’ll look into it.

Any chance that you could publish the source files on the ACC Drive? The PDFs are on there but the guides are now in need of updating to reflect current policy.

Done!

I wish I’d had time to carry on making these guides…

OK updated the FT one - anyone want to fact check/proof read for me please?
