Football Chat

Also unlike your crossword book ?

We get it, you don’t like football. It’s fine to have opinions, but you don’t have to say them - especially in topics that don’t actually interest you. You won’t see me in any croquet or bowls threads complaining about the lack of screaming or the ad revenue from Gaviscon and Voltarol or whatever sponsorships those sports have.

To those that understand it, it was the most entertaining England have played for a while. The passion was definitely there and you could see it in the style and aggression of the defending, and in the attacking during the second half - one or two wasn’t enough.

There was an increased pace of play, more creativity, better pressing when required, and better desire all over the pitch. Newer, younger additions got a good run and performed well, and a few (now) stalwarts led the way in exerting control.

This is the first time in decades that we’ve reached two semis in a row - this is a positive and exciting time to be an England football fan.

Geez, after the 18 months we’ve had are we not yet allowed to revel in some positivity in the areas of our choosing?

Let people enjoy what they enjoy!

I have puzzle and crossword books that I dig out from time to time because it stops the dementia setting in! Not done one in a while though as I can’t find it.

If someone enjoys watching football and feeling good about how their team is performing, let them feel good and enjoy it. Same for women’s tennis. Or crosswords.

There’s enough that divides us in this country, and enough reasons to feel gloomy, but football, right now, is the largest uniting force among the English because we get to laugh at the Scots and the Welsh, and is an even bigger massive good news story now we’ve left them back in the early stages and put two past Allemagne.

Is this maybe …

England players do not get a fee - to quote BBC News

the example set by England’s players since 2007. In that time, all the appearance fee money they would have received has instead gone to the England Footballers Foundation, which has distributed more than £5m to charities.

yes they get paid a significant amount by their club employers and it would be expected someone is at the top of the club game to be considered for national team, but to suggest they are getting paid to play for England is a misconception - yes “…they are doing something they want to do…” but no they are not “…getting paid a King’s ransom to do”

Huh, I didn’t know this. Always assumed they got paid just as well for the Euros/World Cup as they do for the ‘local’ stuff! TIL

They’ll still be getting their club wages though during this time won’t they?

it is a good question.

given player salary is quoted as “per week” are they paid for a “week” when they are not playing football for their employer?

ie are footballers only paid for ~44 weeks of the year given they do not play club football in June and July?

They don’t play then but they would be expected to train if not on annual leave (much like teachers I guess they are limited as to when they can take their holidays)

but teachers are on a monthly salary based on a year wage…it would be odd for teachers to get paid only 11 months of the year simply because they don’t work (teach) the whole month of August and would bring into question the likes of Christmas and Easter holidays - being partial months of teaching shoudl they get a full months pay?
I suspect like most people their wage is divided by 12 and that is their monthly wage prior to any deductions.

Footballers however are quoted as paid £X per week…is that simply because it is more palatable to hear £20k a week rather than £1 million a year?

Yep.

Normally they would be at pre season training camps etc

Anyone else thinking of standing the sqn down on Wednesday night?

If I was still on a Squadron, yes. The Staff mostly would t want to be there and neither would the Cadets.

In normal times I would consider showing the match on the screen in the main hall, but social distancing would all fall apart at the moment.

Yep, exactly this.

If we paraded Wednesday I know the boss would be standing down the squadron!

Probably not in Wales, Scotland or NI.

Just put it on Cadet Portal as unit stand down… All the staff want to watch it, most the cadets want to watch it, and even with the cadets that don’t chances are their parents won’t want to do drop off/pick up.

not even to support Denmark?

Viva Espana!

IF we win tomorrow I’ll take Spain over Italy at the moment…

We might have some kind of hope against Spain… it’s a hopeless, Star Wars-esq end of the universe hope… but there would be hope…

Please no jokes about “the empire strikes back”… in this age it’s deemed tasteless.

Never have you said anything as true as this.

Italy are incredible and Spain is manageable
