Parkrun took over the 5K app a while ago, and have launched a new GUI today. I’m liking it, looks much more user friendly and presents more useful info on the first page.
Seen some chatter about the new GUI, seems its android only atm.
Playing around with it, it’s good. It’s taken me a minute to find everything, but all the functionality is still all there and it’s better presented. The screen above is my own home screen.
There is an issue that the coloured square grid, for showing when you’ve attended, uses the same colour for volunteering as for the background colour in dark mode, but I’m sure they’ll fix that quickly enough.
Just landed on iOS
Pretty mad day. Insane elevation gain at the start followed by some great snowy plateau walking. The the Gondola down! 3h 22m is the moving time. We stopped for coffee and cake multiple times ![]()
I’ve been looking at running/athletics clubs ahead of my upcoming move.
My former road running club charged £25/year.
The best athletics club in my current city charges £85/year, which includes track & field access and coaching.
The equivalent athletics club in the new city? £180/year!!!
I’m rather enjoying the presence of these things people call “hills” - a better view than I have had at parkruns before.
Just got into jogging a little, just with some cheap ish running shoes and on rough paving around my neighbourhood. But I’m getting pain in my shins after a few mins. Is this normal?
No.
The cheapish shoes might be the problem - head to a local, independent running store and ask them to do a gait analysis. You might need something more cushioned and supportive than what you’re currently wearing, but be prepared to pay up to around £100-140 for the right pair (anything above the price bracket is likely to be a performance shoe, which you won’t need yet, and anything below that bracket before discounts is unlikely to be supportive enough).
You might feel a tightness when you run, especially if you’ve not done much before, but you shouldn’t be feeling any pain.
This is where the army went wrong with me (and many others) in issuing the Hi-Tec Silver Shadow trainers.
Thanks! Will have to give that a whirl then I reckon. These are what I’m using currently
I’ve knackered my knee by not changing my decent shoes in time. Worth tracking your mileage and being proactive about replacing them — it’ll sneak up on you!
This. I used to wear Silver Shadows for the fitness test (I liked the idea of a ‘PT uniform’ rather than having to decide what to wear) and gave myself really bad shin splints that got me downgraded for years.
Ah, the “good old days” when they started issuing green trainers at Cranditz.
There was also a “boots issue” mini- cse (couple of days, maybe just one day?), where officer cadets-to-be could be issued with their boots, with guidance how to break them in. They could also carry out a voluntary 1.5 mile run to assess their fitness levels.
I think this was scheduled about 6 wks prior to their main cse. This was plenty of time for motivated students to break in their boots - & it became very clear, very quickly, when main IOT started, who had not done so!
I did this…6 weeks pre IOT…3 days later my right knee was destoryed in a rugby match. I was going to be a barcode brigade member but the RAF don’t like people aged 18 with bits of metal holding their knees together permanently
The risk of something like this is actually why I stopped playing rugby. I’m considering getting into reffing it now though.
Went again today, used a runners loop and had no pain! Success!
People often forget how important this is!
What is it?
How they do their laces!
