Couch to 5K programs - best one to follow please (I googled it :see_no_evil:) - I don’t want an App, I want something I can print off and follow. I swear it wasn’t this complicated when I last did it (yes that was 10+yrs ago!), since when was cross-training days added?!

Seeing as the spaniel is now suitably recovered from surgery and post-op complications, but having been restricted to 1x5min walk a day for the best part of six weeks, he’s lost a lot of fitness, so in a moment of madness, I suggested I re-introduce him back to running (& teach him to run nicely on a lead) by turning him into my running buddy, before handing him back to OH for longer runs (they used to go and do 7+ miles on a Sunday morning for fun) - he will regain fitness much quicker than I will get to run 5k but I’m getting older and feel I should be doing something and I’ll be honest Sara Cox’s effort last week has given me some hope that my old bones could still run (I was a sprinter in my younger days), I’ve never really enjoyed longer distance running, a 10k was the one and only longer-distance race I’ve ever entered and I think that scarred me for life

I’ve always sworn by the Runner’s World one:

6-week-training-plan-5k-beginner-final-1591631365

Usual caveats; there’s no such thing as running too slowly when building up.

Dogs are also allowed at all 3 nearby parkruns (1 dog per runner on a short, handheld lead). There’s usually a few at each; could be good for you if you want to get into canicross.

This transformed my experience of running.

I always hated it because the only times I ran, I was running as fast as I could or further than I should have without training (thanks, bleep test…)

If you could be convinced to follow an app, fitness22 did one and it’s certainly nice to not have to think about anything and just listen to the voice.

Don’t be afraid to just shuffle along though. You’ll be amazed how quickly you improve even by forcing yourself to crawl along!

Running slowly (8:00 - 9:00/km) over a sustain period of time (3-4 months) made me faster too.

Last year’s marathon training block took my parkrun time down from 26 mins to 20 mins, smashing my old PB by over 2 mins!

ā€œRun slow to run fastā€ really is true. I wasn’t even really running all that far - usually around 30km/week.

Just what I was after - thank you!

I may be tempted to do a parkrun, an old school friend is a serious parkrun tourist and she wants to come over to do the nearby one at the big hall in the new year.

I do like the one at the hall, although the bottom bit of the path can get a bit narrow.

My regular is the one up the hill, but I started at the one in the park in town.

There’s only one Parkrun in my entire town. People travel from neighbouring towns as they don’t have one.

Excepting the ones in (or, with one, literally just outside the city), the next nearest parkrun is a 40 minute drive away. Then again another 30-40 mins beyond that to the next nearest.

It’s a shame there aren’t more, and there are some nearby (ish) towns that should have one. One that comes to the forefront of my mind closed for Covid and never reopened, leaving a huge gap with no coverage.

I just tried this and it seems to ignore all my walking and skiing, and just savages me on the fact I’ve done 1 bike ride this year :joy:

Thats because it knows you only going skiing for the Apres Ski :joy:

Odd though as it picked up (and roasted me much to @AlexCorbin delight about all the Road Marching)

I’ll have you know I did 94km in a single day in March!

But yes, skiing is a means to eat and drink in fun places :joy:

You disgust me

Having seen it on your Strava, I think you need to post a picture of the jumper on here.

Everyone would be proud.

I’ve now just gone out my way to find you both on Strava. Maybe when I move to France I’ll start doing more interesting things on there

I’ll apologise now for how boring my Strava is right now; injuries & illness have had the better of me.

Normal service will resume shortly.

Says the person who’s done a 5k today, and I’ve not done anything since October :joy:

Mr Emz was there this morning, he said it was really busy

I was just looking at my activities from earlier in the year, running and walking through the Andes sometimes at altitudes higher than is physically possible in Europe. A 5k seems like nothing by comparison, and is disappointing given how much fitness I’ve lost in the past couple of months.

Just had the results come through. They normally get around 250 - 300 finishers, today we had 757.
