Fitness Chat (Personal Development)

So I am actually on one of these jabs, WeGovy.

I was getting frustrated at how much of a mental battle I had to have with myself when properly managing my diet - it was grueling and frankly made me miserable although I persisted.

Doc did some tests, discovered I had developed insulin resistance. Best I can understand it, I would have to eat more than I actually needed for my body to decide it was fed. This is why I found eating the right amount, coupled with a exercise based caloric deficit a battle.

Been on this stuff now for 2 and a bit months. Within an hour of the first dose, what I am calling ā€˜food noise’ was gone. My body isn’t screaming at me to eat anymore when I am dieting and exercising.

The result is that in this time, I am down a little over a stone and 3 inches on my waist. It isn’t a magic injection that makes you lose weight - but for me it allows me to diet and exercise without the constant mental battle.

My GP assures me that in the background my insulin resistance will resolve and that around March time I will come off of it and will be able to continue doing what I want/need to do without fighting myself.

@AlexCorbin I am no fan of needles either, but in truth it’s so fine that you don’t feel it at all. No blood or visible puncture.

Finally joined the local gym. No idea what I’m doing, but at least I’m doing something!

Now alternating days between running and gym work. Initial membership is for 3 months, so looking forward to seeing what I can achieve in that time.

Ladies and gentlemen allow me to present the single most ā€œSports directā€ race t-shirt I’ve ever earnt in my life…

They didn’t even give out medals, so we have this and a water bottle that looks like a dumbbell…

I saw this today and thought that it might make an interesting personal challenge if you can get a small team together. Trailwalker – Gurkha Welfare Trust

Gym membership has been cancelled… mostly wasted money :man_facepalming:

Signed up for a Conquerer Challenge with the other half.

I use my Apple watch for walk tracking which works fine, does anyone have experience of a device that connects to Apple fitness? Without being an Apple Watch?

Can highly recommend MacroFactor for calorie tracking.

It’s got some really clever smarts and works by ascertaining your actual expenditure based on what you say you consume and what then happens to your body weight (change as your metabolism etc will).

Apple health or Apple fitness?

The fitness app I think requires their eco system.

I use a Garmin which does talk to Apple health.

I thought this, but health should work :+1:

For anyone wanting to up their activity in the how of losing weight…

Please do some reading / research into the importance of diet - not in terms of having to reduce your consumption - but in terms of WHAT you’re eating.

There are LOADS of articles, books and podcasts that can be followed that will explain the significance of gut health.

I lost just under 2 stone between Nijmegen and Dodentocht (just under a month!) - I then went on to lose another 2 1/2 stone between August and November.

I’ve successfully managed to keep most of it off December, without really ā€œtryingā€.

Key info - fat is not the enemy - sugar and ā€œsimpleā€ carbs are…,

The biggest single change you can do to help lose weight, will be to remove / substantially reduce sugar intake.

Sugar is responsible for the rollercoaster ride of sugar highs and crashes - many of which trigger impulse eating

Next evil… bread, pastry, pasta etc made with refined white flour. Regarding bread - specifically mass produced bread, as opposed hand baked sourdough and rye breads for example…

Other baddies - potatoes (especially in the levels of excess most of us would be happy to munch on them!)

Sadly… alcohol is mostly a bad thing… but some forms are worse than others…

The good news is - by sorting out your diet from a gut-health point of view, means that you can become more ā€œdiet flexibleā€ and able to enjoy occasional ā€œtreatsā€ or slips…

@Victor_Zulu saw how shocked my friends were after not seeing me for a few weeks…

I’m now getting excited about seeing them at Cosford in April!

To put things into context… I’ve gone from 44ā€ to 36ā€ trousers, no longer wearing 3xl T-shirts and now in XL instead…

I took a break from dieting from mid November to last night to get me past a number of family birthdays, and Xmas - and of course I ate ā€œbadā€ foods, but I didn’t feel compelled to over eat…,

Ultimately it comes down to a ketogenic style diet, that is high in plant based food as in vegetables, salads and some legumes and grains… plus protein!

Intermittent fasting is not as scary as it sounds… it just means not constantly snacking…

Other key considerations… if you’re not already, consider taking the following vitamins and supplements…

Berocca / Multivitamins with lots of Vitamin B group.
Zinc to improve your immune system
Magnesium to improve your sleep and to reduce stress
Iron to improve energy - especially if you feel tired - or appear pale / washed out.

I am NOT a doctor, but I am shocked by the difference I made to my own health this year…

Happy to received DMs from anyone interested in more info…

I bet you follow Eddie Abbew as well.

This is how I lost about 4 stone last year, cut out sugar and carbs when I’m not exercising.

I also use intermittent fasting for times when I’m not using any calories, lots of people still consuming 3 meals a day as that’s seen as normal and just sitting behind a desk.

Ha ha I’m pretty sure Abbie was a guest speaker on one of the podcasts!

I started by listening to Dr Michael Greger’s ā€œHow Not to Dieā€ and ā€œHow Not to Dietā€ audio books…

I’ve also listened to Lucinda Miller - looking at possible impact of changing diet to improve life with ADHD & Autism (it’s NOT a cure, but it makes MAJOR differences)

Dr Hyman Show has a terrific ā€œbest ofā€ over Christmas

For anyone still yet to be convinced… Big Pharma want to sell you a tablet or even better a medical device… they have NO interest in helping you improve your diet - because there’s no money in it…

Eating more healthily is within your own control - but admittedly, it takes organisation… but the biggest single hurdle, is getting rid of sugar - after that, the rest is actually ā€œpretty easyā€ā€¦

And I’ll be honest - it has done my confidence and ego the power of good hearing SO many people say what a difference they can see in me!

I might even go so far as to admit that when speaking to people I’ve not seen in a while, I ā€œmightā€ try to stand side on, with one leg of behind the other!

Oh - and you’d probably be surprised that eating lots of fruit ISN’T actually good for you… better than sweets and chocolate yes… because it comes with fibre… but still comes with a lot of sugar…

Sorry - sounding preachy now… but it REALLY does make a massive difference to your general health, your immune system, stress levels, waistline and mental health…

Meant in the kindest way possible… as an organisation… I think many staff would have to admit that they are not as healthy as they would like to be.

There are MANY reasons why we’ve all ended up like this - but doing something about it is not as hard or scary as it sounds - it’s also not as boring or mundane as you might fear…

I used to scoff (poor choice of words I know) at Kate Moss’s famous quote ā€œnothing tastes as good as how skinny feelsā€¦ā€

Ok so, I sort of agree… but I do love eating tasty food…

The difference is I now eat around 30-35 different plant based ingredients for dinner - and my gut health IS improving…

I’m still on my journey - as I’ve got another 2-3 stone that I’d love to lose by the summer…

The biggest loss of weight comes in the first few days as you lose water weight… in my case, I lost about half a stone in 4 days!

Every little change you make, is a step in the right direction…

Happy New Year folks - hopefully see you at Cosford or Nijmegen… if everything goes according to plan - I’ll be the 6’3 bloke wearing spandex hotpants - shouldn’t be hard to miss!

Hard agree. Unless you’re moving A LOT or you have certain medical conditions, carbs are the enemy for weight loss.

I don’t remember what my weight loss was in stones, but it was around 40kg in almost no time. As I dropped to 72kg at my lowest, it means I lost more than half of my end weight thanks to following a low-carb diet.

I’ve subsequently put some of that back on since moving to Peru, mostly as a consequence of how carb-rich the diet is here (and how expensive good meat can be).

But they taste so good!

I need to get back onto Slimming World to be fair. I did lose about 3 stone on it over a few months but once MrsSS got pregnant we stopped and slowly allowed the weight creep back (that and secret to good food at the moment seems to be double cream and parmesan!)

I’m off with work again in a few months. So this is my challenge out there.
Pretty sure I can already move the weight required, but the single leg squat might prove challeneging.

I think I’m in trouble.

Under 2 months out for this 50k and, for the past 2 weeks, my Achilles has felt like it’s going to expload. I haven’t even been pushing the distance either - no more than a half-marathon at any given time.

Stretching, foam-rolling and trigger point massages aren’t really doing much. I’m already low on volume, so don’t want to ease up any further. Tempted to just push on and hope for the best tbh.

15lbs lost this week, stopped snacking. Will be difficult next week as living out of a Hotel in Cork and Dublin

Oh man, good luck… :grimacing:

I’m 14/52 half marathons down now and my knees get pretty achy. I need to start getting some weight lifting back on the agenda, but it’s finding the time!
