Fieldcraft essentials,techniques and tips

@dazizian
Getting hold of L98s IS a faff.
Unless younuave access to plenty of motivated staff, who are qualled up and you have dte lined up also.

If you have all that, it’s easy.

Now back in the real world on normal Sqns. We havent a hope in hell of any of that.

For perspective. My Wing hasn’t used L98s in fieldcraft, in the last 9 years.

We simply dont have any of the above to be able to.

Then there is the issues as @AlexCorbin mentioned just to get basics done.

Without sweeping reforms, wholesale adoption of FT on Sqns and support… actual support for FT from above. I cant see FT being in our org by 2030.

Also.
If you provide a how to guide for setting up and sorting some of this so called ‘easy’ to arrange FT from a normal Sqn, with normal Sqn resources, that would be a big help.

All this, plus the lack of a Wing FTO who left just before delivering the new FCI conversion course. :frowning: We’re a little stuck at the moment and really I need to ask OC Wing what the plan with it is. I want to just be able to run basic FT within the Sqn perimeter without weapons once more. I used to have 5 fieldcraft authorised instructors then went straight to zero FCIs.

My training programme has been so BORING lately with our lack of FT and skill at arms training. Due to bubble sizes dictated by winter weather and building size, can’t really even run sports evenings either. I may as well have just stayed with virtual parade nights.

Slightly more productive contribution… any ideas when we might get to see first drafts of PTS Fieldcraft @dazizian ?

I didn’t say it was easy or practical at Sqn level. I’m saying it is beneficial and possible.

No but there will be something for April.

I hear you. We are working on this.

For how long have you been without one?

What happened to them? You mention something about a conversation course … what conversion course?

Tomorrow if I had my way. Of course I could only dream of that happening :joy: However, we might have more of an idea of what is likely tomorrow.

My EUF was approved and fine. It was the park about 200m from the unit. It’s great, open areas for judging distance etc. And a wooded area for concealment. It’s great.
But at renewal, region canned it as I didn’t have TOPL. And the Local Authority won’t respond to emails to let me give them money if we damage the park.
Can you get someone to revisit our need for TOPL in parks? It’s a nonsense!

^ Fixed that for you.

That’s very much not in our hands. Tell me the park and I’ll give it a stab for you.

How did you get an EUF through without topl in the first place?
That’s been requirement ever since ESFs came in as part of the ESF/EUF ACTO.

In hindsight, I don’t know. Must have got lucky?

I’m going to have another go soon. Fortunately, through my day job I have a good working relationship with the council’s head lawyer, she can sign it.

in terms of lack of FC I think AlexCorbin and Batfink have it pretty much nail on head.

FC isn’t my thing so can’t say I get overly involved, but I have been on my fair share of units in my time, and only one was really active on FC and as there was a ex-Rock on the CFAV team and wasteland rightnext door to the Unit which we had permission to use.

for everyone else it has been keen staff who lack interest in dealing with the admin to run around the fields/woods if something local is available…

Not sure that’s true. We successfully lobbied for an exception to TOPL on AT - granted it took forever - but that may have been granted because of the more ‘civilian’ nature of the appearance of the personnel conducting it.

I wonder if the TOPL for EUF argument should be raised on the new Team in Teams - Valuing Our People

That was exactly it AFAIK. Essentially anything in civvies should be fine. Anything in uniform needs TOPL. Or anything large scale in civvies may also need it.

Wont hurt to raise it via all means possible and it will at some point end up on the right desk.

The only way around TOPL is a licence for use, such as with Windsor Great Park.

Is that possible more generally for ‘royal’ parks, if that is the right term? Or national trust?

It’s a case-by-case principle and theoretically possible for any piece of land.

Thanks

I’ve read that the NT often have some specific restrictions on what they allow but it varies from property to property.

Thinking rural rather than a Hone Counties country house.
