A guide for Mac has just been added to the SBN for this. Give it a whirl.

Ta very much - can’t locate the new version (only this old one) - any pointers please?

I promote the exact opposite, ignore rank on AT.

Yep, much safer. In an emergency someone shouting ‘Sir’ is no good when there’s multiple people that could refer to!

Exactly this.

Never mind the rank, it’s the expectation of over-blown numpties who expect a civilian to refer to them by rank or “Sir.”

B*gger off back to your day job! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Back in the day, we normally had the “1 up 1 down” rule for “sir” during informal situations. I believe in some situations within the service, such as Air Traffic Control, use of sir/ ma’am is discouraged as staff need to immediately identify who they are talking to in an emergency situation.

That’s the logic I go for when emailing academics or people at work who more than likely have a PhD.

It’s Dr ____ until they sign off with their first name.

I have never included my middle name in email sigs. Middle initial, from time to time, but never the full name.

That should get added to external emails automatically (otherwise you end up with a stream of them in internal conversations).

100%

Don’t go adding your own, unless it’s really needed. The standard MOD one gets added automatically.

Or a custom addition such as “I only check this inbox during parade hours, because I’m a volunteer with a life goddamnit.”

That’s more for the out of office response. It’s standard practise in the reserves.

I still consider OOO as actually away and not at all responsive in a usual timescale.

It was spam everyone, stand down.

They’re getting better…

It was inane enough to be a real post

I was like, new member, odd place to jump in, but we’ve definitely seen weirder first takes!

I’m fairly sure the E2 that originated the cascade message reference flags for VE Day needs to amend his email signature. Old telephone numbers crossed out, an instruction about auto forwarding specific text (pretty sure that was sent to him to do not add to every email).

But the cherry on the cake was sending it BCC but then listing everyone! :person_facepalming: Could also qualify for any/all of the makes me laugh, grinds my gears, or smashing communications threads.
