Last night I had a brain wave (rare) am I the only one who finds it irritating not know where Cadets come from when they are in No3 Dress? Before I officially feed this idea up the Chain of Command. What are peoples thoughts my picture I just mocked up?
The Expeditionary Air Wings have them as an identity. Thoughts/ Feedback welcome?
Its all well and good having a squadron number on the uniform but:
A) how many people will peer round to look at the sleeve instead of just asking
and
B) people dont really remember the number and name, they just need to know the name most of the time
I don’t think I ever really look at a cadets brassard to find out which Sqn they come from, I just ask them. It is a good idea though, I always think that it’s odd cadets don’t have a brassard in no 3 dress really. I know it’s field wear and all but they wear brassard a with working blues.
One is enough, on the right side, same as the brassard.
Just call it what it is. Addition of Sqn Identifying badge to MTP dress. As soon as you say things that associate other formations, then there is a natural kick back from some who will take the view that you are trying to make your self / your cadets look like something they are not. By all means mention that there is a precedent in your argument, but keep the title and presentation nicely cadet focussed.
I would only suggest having one ID badge on an arm. I put it on both to see what it would look like and to help pick the most suitable arm. I agree with MW, the right arm would be best.
The number on the arm wasnt just because I find it frustrating not knowing where a Cdt was from and yes I did communicate to find out. But it’s info I would like to know without having to ask. To say you dont know the names of Sqn’s just by their number is poor skills. It’s a sence of identity and a quick reference.
I feel it brings a sence of unity and bellonging and your number should be shown off for all to see who you represent.
I do still welcome feedback and anyone else who wants to help me push this up then feel free to help me with wording etc like Mike Whiskey has done.
i like it - much more for unit cohesion/morale etc… than for identifying the Sqn’s that random cadets belong to.
the blue also looks good on MTP, and with a decent TRF would significantly add to the ‘blue footprint’ when cadets are in No3’s. when i was a cadet one of the NCO’s badged up a green wooly-pully with the Air Training Corps brazzard badge and a unit identifier and it looked pretty tasty. he had to get rid, but it was a good looking creation all the same.
personally i’m in favour of using the blanking plate as a ‘field brazzard’ - it would be, imv, useful in the training area/range environments to be able to see at a glance who’s a first aider, who’se been to the junior leader thing, who’se done the BEL training, got marksman badges etc…
I think it’s a sound idea; the only issue I have is how do you propose to make similar arrangements for those cadets who have not got (and never will have) PCS?
Angus has already mentioned that the ATC brassard badge with unit identifier looked pretty good on greens, so why not have these on both shoulders of all No3 shirts/jackets a la Regt mudguards? This would also go a long way to aid the Blue Footprint. However, it might be scoffed at due to additional costs of ATC badges.
Is there a need or is this just a fad? I like the concept, it shouldn’t cost too much and everyone will have MTP in a few years time. I can’t help think, WHY?
Is there a real need for any of our badges other than rank and classification? We could end up going down the scouts proficiency badges warren here!
In all honesty, no, I don’t think there is a huge and burning need for it, but it would go some way to identify our cadets as ATC rather than members of the brown cadet organisation. Whether the cost of achieving that is justifiable is another argument.
wouldn’t that get a bit expensive? a thousand different printing/sewing runs of 50-odd pretty complex badges each… ££££££££££££
using the ATC crest could be a simple way of replacing the woeful air cadets TRF as well as ‘RAF-ising’ the MTP/DPM uniform, its not exactly a brilliant solution, but its easy, and its possible that even HQAC couldn’t make that much of a mess of it.
the number badge shouldn’t be that expensive to produce, even though there’s a thousand different variations of it - if the current supplier doesn’t wish to continue with it, i’m sure that the MOD could find someone willing to take its money…

You make me laugh.
Requirements:
We want ~900 different units to be able to email and order of 100 units. That request to be sent to a nominated address within a small timescale. The order to be sent to a different address for payment, which we will take ages over processing. And it has to cost no more than 10p per unit which is around a 4% profit.
Nominations to:
No: all of the other badges do that; a discrete number achieves nothing of the sort
Perhaps allow squadron personnel to wear their unit badge on the blanking plate instead.[/quote]
Sorry Incubus, my post probably wasn’t that clear. I agree that the number on its own does not identify any Service or Corps affiliations. I was making the point that the ATC brassard badges worn as mudguards would go someway to identify our cadets as not being Army.
nominations for what - business halfwit of the decade for agreeing a contract and then deciding it was unworkable?
if he doesn’t want the contract someone - who has a greater grasp of the situation - will bid for it based on a rather more workable basis. if HQAC won’t offer it on a more workable basis they’ll run out of badges, at which point a grown-up will grip them and they’ll reconsider the whole issue.
the individual price could go up by a couple of pence - subs? - the ordering could be done in a much more planned manner in larger batch sizes… its almost as if two people who could tie their own shoelaces could sit in a room and come up with a mutually agreeable plan…
