I’m pretty sure the jumper / jersey is ‘Blue-grey’ so, to make a point, you could highlight the absurdity by wearing your wedgewood blue backed ones!
Don’t think I didn’t ask which blue.
Point out that NCOs wear ‘rank slides’, officers wear braid (backed if necessary).
Ergo any regulation specifying ‘rank slides’ doesn’t apply to us…
Or just tell them to jog on.
Or add at Para 0221 c ‘for cadets and ATC WO/SNCOs’.
It’s exactly this sort of discrepancy that the blinkered Uniform Nazis love to pounce on. Hence my comment earlier.
Goat? I think I’ll go and get mine!
Edit: Or just do as Matt says and tell them to ram it!
Or add at Para 0221 c ‘for cadets and ATC WO/SNCOs’.
It does read as if that was the intention of the paragraph
This has gotten my goat a bit…
Even when I were a lowely Pilot Officer… I would have told the (talking out of their backsides) WOs to put their heels together and do one and get on with something meaningful.
Really, some people just need to grow up AND/OR learn the letter AND intention of the regs.
I know its just a minority, but I can just see how some in the WO club see the Cmdt’s instruction about them being the custodians of dress and officers being removed from uniform, as a simple excuse to bully younger officers.
I repeat, that it is a minority, but said minority are usually the most visible and loudest of the WO community… to those who know what theyre talking about… sort the numpties out.
I disagree. Whether you were right or wrong, the attitude of the WOs was, at best, unprofessional.

In all fairness, the same could likely be said of my response.
Perhaps. I don’t know.
Though from the sound of it, whatever it was, it was probably justified.

c. DPM Lightweight Combat Suit (L/W Jacket & Trousers). No shoulder epaulettes, blue rank slides only are worn on the front rank epaulette.
There are a large number of people who see the bit I have highlighted and that’s it we have to wear the rank slides off our jumpers. I would argue, (and have) that for junior officers the braid is blue. That is all we have to wear. What this regulation is designed to prevent is people wearing the subdued MTP slides, or colouring the light blue stripe in green or tan.
They’re wrong.
You’re right.
It particularly irritates me because it’s actully not complicated.
You, me, and a huge number of other people are able to understand the correct interpretation.
I don’t know what’s wrong with some people? I genuinely find it difficult to comprehend how they can misunderstand some of these things.
The wording might not be great but all one has to do is think a little, and look around a bit.
Even if they were right, that ocassionaly present attitude of “I’m an SNCO/WO…it’s my job to put Officers back in their box!” really annoys me.
I wouldn’t mind so much if they were happy to accept the guidance of having it explained to them, but from what you’ve said they sound like the type who won’t accept that someone knows better than they.
I’ve had to deal with a couple of WOs like that. They have simply been bang wrong about something but were totally unwilling to even open the book to check when it was politely pointed out to them.
I just don’t have any time for people like that.
It’s a personal thing. I find it increasingly difficult to tolerate that special combination of ignorance and arrogance.
That increasingly failing tolerance could well be described as a character flaw of my own; but as I see it, I’ve got too much to worry about in life these days without treading on egg shells around some big egos.
I’d rather get on with doing the things I do well.
Here is what the DIN says for the RAF…

This is good as it shows that Rank Slides and Rank Braid are not the same thing and should not be conflated.
