Annual Inspection

Hi,

Annual Inspection in a few weeks what happens who does it etc.

going off your user name i’ll guess that if you need to know you would! and if you should know but dont thats even more worrying!

it involved a senior officer visiting your sqn inspecting you on parade and then going off to the office to grill your staff and look at paperwork.

You need to turn up, with ironed and polished uniform stand still on parade, answer if you are asked a question (Mine used to ask things like how long have you been a cdt, what your favorite atc activity and what you want to be when you grow up) don’t forget to finish your answer with a Sir/Ma’am.

Make sure you have your 3822 with you and that everyhing in it is signed up-to-date

I can only speak from personal experience so I may be incorrect for your wing/region.

When ever my squadron has had an Annual Inspection, the whole Squadron is formed up in their individual flights (A,B and JCF). After that our CO would march onto the parade square with either the Wing Commander or our Sector Commander (A Sqn Ldr).

All 3 flights are open ordered and stud at ease till it’s their flight being inspected. The Wing Co or Sqn Ldr would pace down the ranks, halting at certain cadets to ask them questions about their time in the ATC. e.g. “When did you get that Regional Marksman, Corporal?”.

After inspecting everyone on parade, he says a few words of praise then disappears into the CO’s office to drink tea and do officer stuff.

Well that’s really helpful.

It depends very much on your local Wing. Some staff are more interested in formality than others. Some Sqns will make a full parade inspection of it…other OC Wings barely want to see the cadets at all and just turn up for an hour ‘staff chat’ and glance at paperwork.

The above comments sound about right for most though I would think.

Well…that certainly explains why people keep shouting at me…

It’s the ‘Swan’ syndrome; looks smooth above water, but paddling like hell below the waterline.

Loads of work should have been done before the arrival of WSO/OC Wing to ensure details have been collated for AI; on the night, it can be slow/boring from a cadet prospective, because its all going on behind the scenes.

I’ve been involved in over 30 AIs man and boy and I’ve never known cadets to be inspected or have any role other than the “well done” bit on final parade.
Personally I don’t take the “fresh paint” or turn up or else approach, my WSO would fall over if he walked in and it didn’t look like a normal squadron night. The only thing that is done is remind cadets and staff to ensure the uniform looks OK.
Even now the information is largely on Bader much of the data bits are done beforehand.

From a cadet perspective turn up and do what you always do and don’t worry about it.

My squadron is having our first Annual Formal Inspection, next week, under the new system adopted by the wing. It involves a ceremonial element where the squadron is reviewed by the WSO, excutive positions are held by Cadets. There will be a corps knowledge check for the cadets, the NCOs get a debrief with the reviewing SNCO, a presentation is given to the OC & WSO about the squadrons activities over the past 12 months. There is also a Q&A session for the cadets with the WSO.

General Administration checks are carried out by the WSO throughout the year.

Following the AFI I shall update you all.

Wow! That’s… a lot. Funny that the ACO AFI doesn’t follow that pattern.

It will be interesting when the Annual Assurance Audit (AAA) comes into effect.

Indeed.

Where’s the policy on what an AFI should consist of?

There isn’t one!

Each Region has its own bespoke form/format

for me it would make sense that your AFI follows the same process as you’d be expected to show in a Lee’s Inspection

I know… just making a point!

I agree, it should follow exactly what you are expected to do for the Lees.

Our inspection is by our Wing Commander

that has been the format for us for 3 or more years!

i recently heard the format of the formal “inspection” by the Wg Cmdr however is going to change for us, based on a “presentation” format of explaining what we have achieved in the last 12 months

a presentation by the Sqn (Staff/Cdts) which my CO said would “run in the same format as our annual review” which for us is an explaination to the invited parents and VIPs what the year included, based on the various activities and what they consists of and of course how we got on

ie

Annual Camps are a week away, living the life of the RAF, visiting the different sections…etc. this year we went to RAF Anytown
at the Wing athletics all Sqn met at the sport field and compete in…[insert track &field events]…this year was our best year winning 2 Silvers and 6 bronze medals
we have many opportunities for shooting, firing the…[list rifles and marksman awards] this year X number of Marksmans were awarded

etc etc
