Zero Tolerance - what does it mean or suggest?

It’s interesting to note that recently there has been talk of ‘Zero Tolerance’ of several areas of behavior in the ‘Adult’ side of life in the Corps.

I would invite discussion as to what people think ‘Zero Tolerance’ is (or suggests) in their eyes?

An old mate of mine (he is a CFAV) was bullied by an officer in a senior post. And the outcome was very unsatisfactory for my mate (and ultimately the Corps).

i’m afraid my experience - both inside the ACO and in normal life - is that zero tolerance of anything means ‘a policy we use to get rid of those we don’t like, and something we ignore when it happens to those we do’.

It would have to be specific and done without favour, which it won’t and therefore I concur with Angus’ appraisal.
Also it would be short-lived to eliminate a percieved problem. How many ‘zero tolerance campaigns’ have we seen ‘advertised’ by govt etc, lots of media for a day or so with promises to do this/that which once out of the spotlight goes away, only to be reinvented every so often when we’re into an election / slow news period?

What it does smack of is people without a clue legisating / policy making as they aren’t intelligent enough to come up with a solution by other means.

Yep, +1 to Angus. My experience has been that they’ll use it to get rid of those they don’t like, and ignore cases that involve people they do like, whatever the level of proof. Nothing fair about it, nothing open and transparent about it, and nothing impartial about it.

What are the specific zero tolerances being referred to?

anything they can find on someone who uses the words ‘incompetant’ or’ baffled’ or the phrase 'if they shot that bunch of questionably competants we could use the money to buy new gliders…

Oh well the last dozen or so times we’ve been on cadet activities, all of those and more have been used and a few others which are far more expressive :wink:

Oh and after the last COs meeting there might be a large number of vacancies!!

I have just left after a 27 year career from cadet through to WO - in my experience nobody is prepared to deal with bullying of staff by staff !! Lets just sweep it under the carpet which results in good staff leaving and bullies getting no more than a little telling off !!!

My mate has certainly seen the issue of the person complaining being ignored (in his case for several years) whilst the powers that be sat back and did nothing. He escalated his service complaint all the way up to Air Command who then actioned it correctly and he won his case. It then was referred back to 22 Grp to administer administrative action to the perpetrator who, in the ‘zero tolerance policy’ promulgated by HQAC should have been given the boot! When that didn’t happen and it appeared nothing had happened to the perpetrator, my mate contacted HQAC to ask what & why? Now HE has been suspended? He also tried to brief his fellow CO’s in the Wing and explain what had happened to him and explain how he was innocent of any wrong doing and that came back to bite him. It seems that he was able to win his case but no one was allowed to know about it!

Quite easily in this day and age I imagine.
In our sector we communicate via personal emails and those that use it FB etc.

Via an email to all the CO’s in his wing…

He didn’t quote the person who did the bullying name. The report quoted was redacted i.e. the names were obliterated from view.

He sent the entire report with names redacted? Seriously?

Yes, it explained to his peers (fellow CO’s) why he was forced into the NEP against his will and how he was totally exonerated 6 & half years later by Air Command (long story).

dis he redact roles which may ID people or just surnames?

He redacted the names. The roles were pretty obvious as they were above S/Ldr rank anyway…
