The MOD once again looking like a bit of a laughing stock…
not exactly a new thing
Retirement of Harrier nothing to put on QE2 or PoW until F35 and still not enough
Nimrod MR4 scrapped and nothing to take its place . We had re rely on NATO and especially Norway for MA and Herc and a guy with a pair of binoculars for MR.
Sentinal R1 Scrapped with no replacement.
Tornado retired leaving the RAF with no IDS aircraft
Sentry scrapped and wedgetail not ready
Retirement of Jaguar then harrier leaving RAF with no close support aircraft.
This list is without thinking too hard
Also the Belfast retirement before the Falkland’s war no widebody transport
HMS Ocean no LPH for the navy.
I think they call it ‘Capability Gaping’
ie lets take a punt on not needing it for the next few years whilst we save money on a fleet that is due to be replaced…
Yet the Indian air force still operates the Jag, the Phantom’s IIRC still in service in NATO (& Japan?) Germany has life extended its Tornados… Harrier still in service with USMC.
Pursuit of ‘exquisite’ capabilities at the expense of mass/depth.
Then again many of the world’s aggressive regimes would have wound their necks in if only we had kept the Chipmunk
We still have operational Chipmunks at Coningsby.
You hear that Putin?
Please, won’t someone think of OpSec
Wait 'til he hear’s of the QRA Vigilant’s with their 3 hour standup time and 20min sorties. He’ll be quaking in his size 5 Valenkis.
Can’t wait to see it providing air support for HMS Victory’s future operations.
She has been in dry dock for 100 years now - must be a hell of a capability refit in that time!!
Don’t mention the two Spitfires and Hurricanes plus a large strategic bomber, Bears eat your heart out.
Might be tiredness but this really tickled me.
Shows our age if we get the reference
Must hurt…
Lost luggage after holidaying. Such fun.
24hrs later and they still don’t know where it is, never mind when they’re getting it back to me.
Reading the comments on twitter to the CAS’s farewell post. Absolutely priceless!
