Have you ever prised open the wall or box and looked inside and thought “You know what, that last chap did a really good job!”
When we had our kitchen put in we discovered the entire house 3rd floor extension and 2nd floor went through a single junction box… Several thousands of pounds later the ring within a ring within a ring is now fixed
Sadly I just get to see old bodges. Worst of all they’re normally from where I bodged something 4 years ago and now it broke again/needs moving. Case in point today was moving a pretty old Colchester lathe to another workshop. I didn’t unwire it in it’s old location but had to re-wire it into it’s new location and the back had quite a few additions to it since it was made originally so had to spend some time working out what was meant to go where. See below:
This is what I was given to start with
Number one rule is take a few photos before you start so if it goes tits-up you can at least revert back to how you found it! Took about 2 hours but all working now! Biggest confusing issue was it had been wired so that the coolant was always on rather than using the button at the front.
The thing is, someone obviously decided that that was a necessary modification, so perhaps you should have left it!?
On a similar vein, many years ago, my family were on holiday in Normandy. (Backstory: My parents collect WW2 vehicles, and we were on a D-Day tour with other vehicle owners, in particular we were in a party of three ambulances, all the same make and model.)
We got to Omaha cemetery and the Americans were out in force, as Bush was due in on the 6th, and it was the 60th anniversary. Massive security operation was in place and armed soldiers were patrolling the car park. We arrive and one of the ambulances, owned by a chap who had little practical idea of how to keep a 60+ year ambulance going, broke down, right in front of the guards.
Cue my dad and the third owner ripping open his bonnet in front of the guards to see what’s what. They decide that the chap had had some cowboys in who had ‘modified’ the system with some additional components and parts. They proceed to strip the extra parts out, chucking random bits of pipework and machinery on the floor all while surrounded by an increasingly nervous security team, trying to decide if this was genuine or some elaborate bomb plot! Eventually they put everything back as it should be and were less than politely told to move on.
I did leave it in place! The button to turn the coolant on/off is very very dead so it was needed. Just had to get my head around what it was in the first place!
I can imagine the stress in the team. Especially if it was the America security guys. Always seem a bit jumpy…
You should have seen the stress of my mum!
I’ve used Sweatshop previously. Really solid advice from actual running coaches - a bit like Cotswolds used to be when buying boots. They had a pretty good gait analysis machine which helped a lot in easing the complexities of a major investment.
Having said that all we actually discovered was I need a decent sports physio and coach to undo many years of abuse and malpractice, a surgeon and supporting medical professionals to fix my defective leg, and then I need a diet and nutrition coach to help me shed a few pounds.
Still gave them bag full of cash for a pair of ASICS GT2000s, some custom insoles and some jazzy socks.
I was toying with asics… The shop in gunwharf quays has the magical machine that scans your feet and makes the soles to match your gait and finds the shoes that best suit how you run.
Ive been told I’ll need a new knee pre 40 after rugby accident that killed my RAF career, 6 weeks out of IOT (Yes I was going to be an officer) but making the most of it not being an issue atm
Keep an eye on Aldi, their Crane running socks are really good
Someone on here converted me to Danish endurance
Alton Sports in Eastleigh were very good for fitting shoes.
Work in chandler’s Ford so might take a wonder one lunch when I’m back in the office
Chandler’s Ford - GMG
brings back bad memories of studying for my ATPLs in a tiny room in our student accommodation on Common Road
I only go there to enter one building then leave
3rd floor extension?! Someone’s doing well!
I wish… House had it when we moved in… Turns out it was a dodgy builders job and taken ages to sort out
Is that just a posh phrase for ‘loft dormer window’?
Ha… Yeah sorta
yes opening the loft hatch.
the whole house is a disaster behind everything we touched - nothing was as you’d want it…i feared opening the loft hatch only to find it is the most complete and well done “room” in the whole house. lights and plugs in sensible locations, boarded, and generally as nice a loft space as you’d hope…why that attitude was missing from the rest of the house however, who knows!
