So BBC News are reporting (live TV, not written yet) that Trump allegedly told the Prime Minister of Norway that he no longer needs to consider their views because Norway didn’t give him the Nobel prize after “stopping all those wars”
I don’t have polite enough words to describe my thoughts.
Here it is. Confirmed by Norwegian PM that it’s real.
Not far off a declaration of war against the government of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.
Starmer now addressing the nation; sounds as though he’s not going to do anything though.
Difficult position; damned if you do and damned if you don’t, but I don’t see how the “special relationship" is sustainable given the current circumstances.
This is beginning to sound like he’s just trying to blow smoke up Donny’s derriere.
I will say, in fairness, this is the most passionate I’ve heard the PM speaking since he’s taken office.
Even if we are pretty much just hearing “I have secured peace in our time”
Stating with questions from the BBC is sending a message also.
I thought it was pretty good. And he did capture some of the nuance here. We can’t just put our foot down and push back hard with out destroying our selves. This has to be done carefully. But he said it’s 100% up to Greenland what happens with is land, not America.
The one thing guaranteed to force Trump to do something stupid is to embarrass him.
I’m seeing more and more Republican members of Congress coming out against all of this too. This is Trumps own agenda that doesn’t seem to have support where it matters.
As I said higher up , those on r/conservative all am generally very against it too. So it’s not got support from some of his biggest supporters either.
Maybe the Epstein files are hidden somewhere in Greenland? ![]()
Nah, then he’d ban anyone from even mentioning the place, let alone stand on the rooftops yelling about it ![]()
He’s even got the UN SecGen calling him out directly now as well, as if that’s going to make any difference…
I was concerned about the start, but it did improve as time went on.
However, I’m very much of the opinion that much of what was said about Trump was likely dictated by him too; mentioning securing peace in several countries seemed to be quite a prominent theme despite the controversial nature of the claims in the real world.
Softening the blow with some smoke? A little “hey, these are good things that make people like you…you like being liked”.
Something that all of this is keeping out of the headlines: the Syrian Arab Army (state military) are currently absolutely dominating the Kurds, despite the alleged ceasefire, and capturing huge swathes of the country:
I went down a big rabbit hole last night, trying to work out how exactly the US would try to take Greenland. When you think about it, it is likely to be a very difficult task both politically and militarily. You would basically need to take Nuuk. This sounds easy, but when you look at the geopgraphy of Greenland, it really isn’t. If the Danes are willing and able to defend the airport from either a military aircraft landing and depositing troops, or parachuting onto the airfield (very risky, especially in winter), there’s no real way to take it in a sudden surprise attack. Such an attack would have no option of medevac or retreat without the US Navy there to provide support, and sending ships there would let everyone know what’s going on, giving Congress time to impeach Trump.
The Danes are fearsome fighters; highly trained and very well motivated. They also wouldn’t be going it alone as most of Europe (though likely not all) would jump in too.
Ultimately, I think the US would win on disposable manpower, but that’s when their real problems would begin; insurgency.
Afghanistan & Iraq showed that the Americans don’t really know how to deal with insurgencies and popular uprisings against military intervention - and this was before Trump threw the idea of Hearts & Minds out of the window. Greenlanders have made it clear they have no desire to be a part of the United States and they know the territory much better than any occupying force could.
Add this to how internationally isolated the Americans would find themselves in such a move, and it’s easy to see just how costly such an endeavour would be for them.
For a brief history, see: Vikings
There is an excellent military museum in Copenhagen if anyone gets the chance. It had a very moving exhibit on their contribution to the Afghan mission (temporary so might have gone now).
Certainly punch above their weight.
I remember seeing them in the gym in Basra. Every one of them was like a Viking (including the hair and beards).
Edit: They also patrolled areas in soft-skinned vehicles that we would only go to by helicopter or with armour.
