Which stats? How many Sqn Ldrs are in pointless jobs? Now that would be a fun FOI question!
All on the old pension scheme I bet…
It’s only because wings havent got the balls to say “Awfully sorry old chap, you’ve been in this job long enough and we don’t need you any more so here’s some Flt Lt tapes and jog on dear boy”
Only they can’t surely because the new rules mean they’d have to go down to Fg Off if they don’t command a Sqn
Wing Security Officer does sound for all the world like a made up job, but then the Air Cadets is full of them, so should there be any surprise.
Security is so wide ranging that I doubt that any one person could be sufficiently knowledgeable in all areas especially in a volunteer organisation unless they have this sort of responsibility day to day.
The role of a CFAV security officer would be checking that we have ticked some boxes against billet doux as issued by HQAC and making banal suggestions, just like H&S and getting bent out of shape, if we haven’t. Also, like H&S there would be no money from the centre to make things happen. How many of us wait for years for works’ orders to be even considered, let alone done and a security threat needs to addressed immediately not 2 or 3 years later.
However if we close windows, lock doors and gates, job done really, which is all we do for our homes. A sqn one of mates was on, was broken into and while they made a mess due to breaking locked doors, all they took was the cash tin from the canteen, which had a £3 float, they got into the stores and were unimpressed by the mass of uniform and camping kit. This seems to be like any household burglary. Like us their weapons had been removed and their old arms chest was used as a cupboard for cleaning bits and other odds and sods.
Understand that it is just a case of the individual being a point of contact for Sy info dist and comms. No indication that this initiative is linked to anything else so suspect that wider conspiracy theories are just that; we did land on the moon you know!
But that was how the Health And Safety Officer started!!
Why do weed need someoneelse to forward emails? Just send them direct and save a job!
I’m not stating that it’s a conspiracy theory, just fed up that there are so many jobs that take Staff away from actually working with the Young People that are the reason for organisation, especially when so many Squadrons do not have COs or the right number of staff!
Surely a healthy cynicism helps in the RAFAC, not a blind acceptance?
There’s no way that RAFAC has been to the moon!!
this is nearly my reaction to everything that changes - what is the Cadet benefit and will they notice?
I go back to one of our old HoDs, whose mantra was if it doesn’t add to what you are doing or benefit the dept you’d better have a bloody good reason, since he was the one who signed your PMR and that got you your bonus, you took heed of his words. That applied to everyone in the dept.
thread drift…
precisely!
consider the move from No8 to L144
benefits for Cadets;
newer weapon = more spares available = less likely to break/fail
Lighter = easier to handle, easier to handle during firing practises
easier to use = more likely to hit the target, more MM awarded
will the Cadets notice? Yes more badges
Gliding situation
move to “Super VGS”
what is the Cadet benefit - n/a - further to travel for most, no guarantee when arrive the weather will be suitable, with a higher demand on CFAV involvement to be running efficiently less likely to be efficient
will the Cadets notice? yes - fewer gliding slots (so far), reduced enthusiasm to put name forward
Change of Commission/move to RAFAC name/change to CFAV rank slides
Cadet benefit - none
will Cadets notice - yes, and then question why
So looks like its Region Wide for W&W, because we need an extra person to hit Forward on emails… wouldn’t the WEXO be better placed as a Full Time person for this?
On wonders what training said Squadron Leader will have as ‘security’ has many aspects.
I was thinking that, arms and cyber are things that come to mind, and are experienced in the field or is it just another job where it’s someone needs to do it. As suggested the WExO would be better placed, as they will already have contact with RFCA when it comes to getting things done and be better placed to speak to them etc in the working day.
Also nice to see I got the box ticking check right ref ‘ensure compliance with security policy’. As such this will just result in spewing forth the company line, getting arsey if people don’t tow the line and being in the choccy teapot brigade for being able to actually give proper advice and guidance.
WeXo would of been the best choice - a lot of the security briefing notes can only go via ALI secure network which Bader emails are not - hence Wexo’s are on DII/ModNet
Also RAFAC are probably not security cleared.
RAFAC have 2 RAFPol engaged to work with us at HQ as security advisers and they are providing information and assistance. We should not need anybody to directly access or interpret raw security information directly from DII.
Are there TORs for this wing security position?
As per, jobs for the boys. Twas ever thus.
(In fairness, we’re not alone in this… Ever seen how many Air officers the RAF has?)
Should this not be an MoD Police function for what has now been turned into a civilian organisation.
This Sqn Ldr has quite a reputation in that wing and from what I have heard about him, seems to fit your description perfectly…!
They are in every Wing, I was describing some WSOs we’ve had over the years.
