What are our current core major sports we do ?
Is it still 7 sports?
Athletics, Cross Country, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, and Swimming.
Anyone heard if we can play crab football yet
That depends which Region youāre in
i thought they stopped rugby
Any of those sports are as safe as you make it, I personally disagree with swimming, yes it is a ālife-skillā however from a ACP 4 point of view, it is very difficult to manage and costly too. I also find it bonkers that badminton isnāt a listed/allowed sport but Athletics involving javelin and shot put where the cadets have had about as much training as the staff (i.e. non) is ok.
Javelin and shot, they just stand at the line and chuck it as far as they can, donāt recall any run-ups or them spinning
I did enjoy badminton at school, but I canāt see how thatās not allowed. Same with basketball, and Iām sure we have a post about these questions somewhere else. *Dons flak jacket
My understanding was that those seven listed are just the ācompetitiveā ones we do, not the ONLY sports we can do.
I donāt think anyone is going to stop you doing badminton as long as itās properly risk assessed etc.
There is a list of approved sports for insurance purposes. Which is listed in ACP 300 Annex C No 306 titled āActivities covered by the MOD Indemnity and ATC Insuranceā Basketball, Cricket, Rounders, table tennis and tennis are on there but no badminton! Any Rugby if itās contact needs a suitably qualified coach
It has to be an approved sport and for Squadron sports nights it should be approved by your Wing Sports officer in advance on SMS.
A lot of sports is a throw back to when the ATC was first formed & chamierās January Club inspired vision for a youth organisation.
what made sense in the 1940s doesnāt make sense now particularly as schools deliver a lot of the sports that use to be only available to private schools.
Considering the cost (which canāt be from public funds) I am still surprised itās still going but I think itās mainly ābut weāve always done sportsā crowd.
Iām pretty sure you donāt need Wing approval for most Sqn-based sports, SMS certainly doesnāt require it.
Agreed totally with that, I can see the benefit of sport if coached correctly. I can also see the Leadership in Sport being a potential āmarketā too but for me Wing Athletics and the like is a huge risk that we probably donāt need to have. If kids are interested in that they are part of their Athletics clubs and usually smash it on Wing Athletics day anyway
I guess it depends where your sport is taking place, with us āsquadron sportsā are off site at hired sports hall as we donāt have the space on squadron however on squadron premises probably not
Even for that weāve never needed wing approval
ACTO 10 States It is mandatory to use the Bader Squadron Management System (SMS) to record and authorise all national, regional, wing and ATC sqn events involving RAF Air Cadets (RAFAC) cadets and Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) which take place away from unit premises unless, unit premises include, where authorised, an Extended Squadron Footprint which is an area adjacent to the unit and has been sanctioned by the Training Safety Adviser as a āSafe Placeā.
So unless it is on an extended footprint (it could be) it should be recorded on SMS
They arenāt saying it doesnāt have to be on SMS, theyāre saying it doesnāt automatically need wing approval.
Depends on your authority as it were, and the sport too as some are set-up different also depends on the sport for example Rugby does need WHQ sign off. Any referrals to Wing, we have it set-up that the Wing Sports Officer signs them off being the SME unless they are urgent and another WSO can be contacted if they arenāt reachable.
That is not what SMS says, which is the arbiter of who can approve what. All forms of rugby say sqns can approve them, along with most of the listed sports with a couple of exceptions.
Interesting. Well someone needs to flag that to the Helpdesk then.
And add something else to the development timelineā¦
