What do you do on sports night?

NCOs at my sqn are trying to think of things we can do on our sports night. We would typically do football but half of the sun hate it and the other half love it. We would do rounders or something similar however that means some cadets won’t be doing anything. We have access to a range of equipment and spaces. On an average sports night with a very mixed crowd what would sports would you do?

The periods of inactivity in sports like rounders and cricket is by design, because they are played in the height of summer. Embrace the opportunity to rest (and comply with work/rest tables) whilst also participating in sport.

Yeah the downtime in rounders provides social and bonding elements, and the game is fast enough that those waiting are cycled through fairly quickly.

No one has ever complained of boredom to me when our sqn plays rounders.

Such as?

Basketball and/or netball very popular with our cadets and cricket as well as rounders

Whatever sports event is next on the calendar, that’s what they practice once a week. Rounders, football, netball, cross country, swimming, and athletics get our cadets out.

Not all cadets are keen on sports and can’t be actively encouraged, so they stay on sqn doing exams, or I’ll take them through ground school and let them have a fly about.
