Wearing of niqabs

I’ve looked through ACP 1358 and I understand there are exceptions to rules but it also states how niqabs are not allowed for practical reasons.

When talking to other NCOs and we believe a Muslim cadet (a friend of two of us) is joining and she wears a niqab. What would the requirements be for her if it is allowed?

Unfortunately, I don’t think there would be any specific requirements as it is unlikely to be allowed in any circumstance.

However, it would probably be best for the staff at their squadron to get advice from their Wing Warrant Officer and the HQ RAFAC inclusivity team.

Hijabs are fine and issued kit. Niqab not

Out of interest, is the reason against niqabs purely for practical reasons.

Also if a cadet wanted to join that wore one what would we say?

I cannot see there being any exceptions that would allow this. With the range of activities on offer, with the exception perhaps of academic or classroom based activities, this individual would not be able to engage whilst wearing a niqab. It’s a purely practical matter and while I would do all I could to be inclusive and respectful to their beliefs, I cannot see how they would be able to participate in much of the cadet experience.

push this to your OC, who can ask the Question of RAF / RAFAC Inclusion.

There has to be some alternative we can offer to them, but they are the people to ask.

It does not fit in with permitted military uniform in any way (whereas the hijab does). As RAFAC, we wear that uniform.

That’s the fundamental issue I think, rather than practicalities related to particular activities.
