On ops I can imagine, but in a training exercise? Come on now.

…had authorisation to be live-armed in RAFG for transporting wpns/ammo to/from ranges. Covert carry of Browning pistols under civvie jackets - significant IRA threat at the time. One person per vehicle with L85 with full magazine fitted. We were permitted to use civvie cars rather than military vehicles for range use.
Surely, the whole purpose of any exercise is to simulate as near as possible the roles and tasks that you would undertake operationally. Therefore, if you are required to be covert and armed for war, why would you not be so on exercises?
