Walking leader qualifications

Not quite true. Remote supervision is in the syllabus of the Expedition Skills module. It isn’t however in the ML syllabus last time I checked.

Which is why even MLs are suppose to have done ESTC before remote supervising? Even though I know of a few who have still not done it as they see them selves as above that…

Yes, that was the reasoning I believe.

Is that at a Mountain Training level? I was told by one of our Course Directors that it was a RAFAC add on? (They also mentioned that later this year the ESM was being changed to a stand alone course?)

Yes, here’s the extract from the syllabus in the expedition handbook:

provide effective remote supervision of expedition groups working independently including:
• planning a phased move from direct to remote supervision
• the use of shadowing – both close and remote, on the move and in camp
• use of manned and unmanned check points
• relocating a missing group

Early on the RAFAC did try to blend the ESTC in but it’s not necessary now. Off the top of my head In the relevant ACATI there’s a paragraph about remote supervision training and holding the ESM is sufficient to be an expedition supervisor.

The ESM is under review as it’s not seen wide take up from a Mountain Training perspective but I’m not sure where it’s headed at the moment.

Here’s a question to mix things up, doing an NGB qualification automatically counts as 2 CPD points under the ACATI.

Now that Camping Leader is a stand alone course, would that not count in the same way? So if you did LLA or HML 4 years ago, then did Camping Leader this year that would cover off CPD for the next 5 years would it not?

I’d say so.

That may well avoid some issues next year for me!
