Volunteer Software Development Team - New Cadet Portal

I need to start doing something like this.

It’s just a shame because this was meant to be one of the many things created to reduce the admin burden but without the cadets, parents and staff working together through one channel, it’s actually causing us more admin trying to chase cadets up to use the portal, then when we have no luck, go through parents, etc. rather than the old way of doing things by just a simple post on facebook for all to see. I really do hope something becomes of it though because I really like the portal as a whole, I was I had it when I was a cadet.

I don’t understand why you’re all making extra work for yourselves.

Everything we do is on Cadet Portal and we’ve removed all physical sign up sheets from notice boards. We’ve not seen any noticeable decrease in the number of cadets signing up for activities and, if anything, we’ve seen a reduction in last minute drop outs.

I still send the cadets home with physical paper joining instructions to give to their parents for AT activities because I’m concerned about informed consent stuff.

We’ve never sent emails round to parents and we don’t have a closed Facebook group.

The training plan goes on Cadet Portal colour coded according to the uniform of the night and we also update the background to our public Facebook page’s profile picture with the appropriate uniform.

The more you hand hold them the less likely it is they will embrace the new ways of working.

I think it’s because you haven’t seen the noticeable decrease but we have. We are a squadron of 60 cadets and to get 5 cadets to sign up for sport is a challenge. This really shouldn’t be the case.

Flying and camps definitely should appear on the portal…

I think it’s not a case of solely relying on the Portal.

We don’t just stick activities on there and leave it at that. We tell the cadets on final parade, during the night, chase down people likely to attend etc.

If parents don’t know about activities isn’t that a communication issue between them and their offspring ?

If the idea behind CP was to make the life of CFAV easier by lightening the admin burden we shouldn’t have to be doubling up by sending out emails as well as pushing events onto the portal - the cadets need to be having conversations with their parents, which is all good life skills.

It is good life skills, I completely agree. I just don’t see why there is such a break down compared to 3 or 4 years ago. Is it that the cadets aren’t as interested in the activities as they used to be? I’m happy to have any suggestions on how we can get the cadets to communicate with parents more because I’m not willing to take ā€˜it’s their fault that they miss out if they don’t tell their parents’ as the excuse.

Not always, we are seeing activities come up that aren’t on the portal at all - and still having spreadsheets for bids attached to some activities.

Anecdotally, a few sector wide events we can see haven’t been pushed to the portal by surrounding squadrons.

The new report system will highlight where there are problems I’m sure!

Does a new announcement really justify a whole version release?
Isn’t there some mechanism for pulling in announcements from a list somewhere, such as a fancy MOTD file?

We aren’t doing anything different to how we used to, except pushing sign ups and documents through for events throughout Portal. Other notification methods are still in place.

Difficult to judge uptake of events as we have a lot of newer ones and many events haven’t been suitable for them. The older ones have adapted pretty well with no decrease of signing up, so seems a good sign.

Flying and camps are on Portal. Camps I can get depends on your Wing catching up, but no reason I can think of that flying shouldn’t be up.

My wexo refuses to put camps on portal.
But then they are Corps renowned as being a massive pain in the ass.

So I have to have sign up sheets and individual excel or different form replies for each camp. As per wexos requirements.
Pathetic.

Whilst I’m on camps… why aren’t the Corps camps on CP.
Why has HQAC green lit and authorised a system it wont even engage or use itself.

Why are these people such dullards!

Then you should be pushing back and asking why. There is no reason for that to happen and it’s creating work for the sake of it.

They are. Suggest you get some facts in line before spouting off.

Erm no they aren’t.

In my wing it’s ā€˜our turn’ for X national camp.
Its 100% definitely NOT on CP.

I have checked, my next door Sqn has checked. Wexo has said ā€˜it’s not and heres the forms’.

Corps shooting academy = listed
National concert band training camp = listed

Drill and ceremonial?
Aerospace?

Not in my wing they’re not

Have you considered they just haven’t been created yet? Rather than bad mouthing everything?

My Wing haven’t got around to putting our Annual Camp on SMS yet so I’ve done it for my squadron so that cadets can sign up. Will just transfer them over when the ā€œofficialā€ one pops up and cancel our one.
