Volunteer Software Development Team - New Cadet Portal

Often best to go straight to ultilearn*, You can get percentages out of it too!

( * I know! Me too! )

Although historically I have found that when Iog into Ultilearn I can see diddly squat about the cadets or their results.

Why is the aerospace camp not being advertised via portal.
Why is the Sqn ldr in charge actively saying in his email for wing Hqs to organise their own .method of selection.
I thought it was portal for all and everything now…

This is sort of 2 tier system is not helpful at Sqn cdr level.

Corps policy needs to adapt to the new ways.

100% agree.

I was really glad to see a all wing email from the wg co this morning praising the embracing and use of Cadet Portal within the wing. Just needs to work it’s way upwards I guess

Exactly what I thought when I read the email from 2 FTS. Not enough details in the poster and pointed cadets to social media.

2 FTS seem to have missed the benefits of Cadet Portal so now Sqns need to distribute this separately. We had a Ramstein camp recently that caused the same issue.

While I agree that is is poorly distributed (It should have gone down the chain as they need to get stuff in place), trying to organise this national camp by bidding and direct advertisement to 17 wings across 3 regions is going to cause far more problems that it solves.

I’m more aggrieved by the 5-ish MB poster attachment which should have been a link to a central document.

i lost my patience banging my head against the HQAC walls about SMS activities for RIAT…

(to be fair i did the same in our Wing as well…but it wasn’t such a painful experience and they soon got the idea).

noise from HQAC: you must all use SMS and have anything off Squadron listed in SMS
Also noise from HQAC: except National HQAC organised camps

seems a case of history repeating itself with CP!

I don’t think the functionality is yet available within Cadet Portal/SMS to handle an event on the scale of size and distribution of national events.

But why, you see cross Squadron, Wing and Region boundaries, so why not Corps :man_facepalming:t2:

Because the people at HQAC cant cope with change.

This is a cultural and training issue and I don’t have a quick fix at the moment, but you are right, we should be practicing what we preach.

It is and it isn’t. We don’t have functionality that allows an event to be published nationally and then to have tiered levels of bidding from Sqn to Wing, Wing to Region, Region to Corps and then back down again - and that’s really really tricky to achieve and we haven’t figured out how to do it yet.

Cadet Portal and SMS v5 was built to allow individual unit and multi-unit events, not massive national camps.

If anyone has any ideas for the above, btw, I am all ears - drop me a PM or email

Quite - it is possible to create an event and add every single Squadron in the ATC if you wanted to. A better way would be to create main event and then have a sub-app for each Wing. Each of those sub-apps can be advertised in Cadet Portal by the Squadrons. You make the Wing person the Director for the sub-app and they manage the bidding process and then feed the final nominal roll back to the main event organiser. Its a bit clunky but it would work.

You are also assuming that HQ staff officers access or use SMS which is not necessarily correct. We are talking internally about how we can change this situation.

James, firstly its good to see a proactive forward thinking overall response. Long may it continue.

As for seeing if the system works, why not use all the main Corps based camps as guinea pigs - RIAT, D&C, Supercamp, etc. All ran at Corps level but with input at squadron level.

That’s the plan!

We are about to start work on version 1.1.0 which will include eligibility for AEF/VGS as a starter for ten. That will mean that cadets who are not the correct age or classification will not be able to bid for these types of events.

This will only be part useful unless their medical status is taken into account as well. No good selecting cadets who are the correct age and classification if they don’t have an in date Av Med Form 1 and, if applicable, F6424.

You aren’t going to hunt for an AV Med form until you have a list of candidates and you aren’t going to get a 6424 until you see something on the AV med form that raises an eyebrow.

SMS should focus on filtering out those who are obviously ineligible but with a caveat that other things may be a factor.

Should CP ask every day in the run-up to a flying allocation whether the cadet can clear their ears?

Not like that’s a new problem, unique to C-Portal…

That’s nonsense. You select them and if it turns out they don’t have an in-date form you simply…
…Get them to complete one. BOOM!

Bouncing this back up as starting to identify some operational issues

Had have cadets sign up for Wg activities and be accepted and sent JIs.
Cadets then do not turn up with no notification to Activity OIC - causing the expected and understandable bad feelings
I get all the old excuses - suddenly ill, car broke down, dog ate the JIs etc - but it looks like the classic ā€˜cadet signs up and forgets to tell/get permission from mum and dad’ and does not think to tell whoever needs to be told

Can’t see an obvious get around for this but in the meantime, since all events pretty much need a TG21 , I have said that unless I see a valid parent signed TG21 filled out for the event suitably in advance I will withdraw them from the course

Comments/Questions/Issues/Suggestions please

That’s pretty much it - set your deadline on what you push to the cadets as a date before the event deadline.
