Volunteer Software Development Team - New Cadet Portal

Has your status on an event been changed by staff?

This only went live on Thursday from the stats posted on social media only ~1000 status change emails but 300 cancelled emails sent.

Which is not many when there are ~ 30,000 cadets.

Just as a side, as I’ve finally had a chance to look through the Cadet Portal instructional videos etc - the Development Team have done an awesome job, you can tell how much work and man hours have gone into this! Especially since you guys are a volunteer team. I’m excited to see my squadron use it!

So, something I’ve encountered recently… An event that wasn’t advertised on Cadet Portal but does appear on an individual cadet’s portal can be declined by that cadet but zero notifications go through to the organisers of that event.

The event in question had a large waiting list and the place would have been in demand had the organisers known about the drop out.

Is there no functionality for a notification, or does it have to be a manual check every time?

Looking at Events with Sub Apps - do nominal roles from Sub Apps roll up into overall Event nominal roll?
Looking at one live at moment but does not appear to be happening
Is this something for the future?

At the moment It’s best to think of the multi-app “camp” type event as many separate SMS events all grouped under another, equally separate, event.

One has to do all things for all events at the moment and the only real benefit that it brings is an obvious indicator that they are somehow connected. Frankly, it’s a pain in the backside trying to get all sub-events signed off before you can even submit the main event.

Hopefully it’ll evolve over time into something a bit more workable because the last time I tried it was actually more work and hassle than just creating separate events.

Believe it or not, it is still a thing and remains one of the most popular email providers on the other side of the pond. Who knew!?

Thank you, that is very kind and I will pass that onto the team

We are meeting this weekend at Cranwell and one of the topics on the agenda for the weekend is deciding what notifications we need to implement and how. Watch this space.

No, they are treated as different and separate things. Cadets only see the main event e.g. ‘Anywhere Multi-Activity Camp’ instead of ‘Climbing at the Anywhere Multi-Activity Camp’ etc. It is on the list to look at.

Can the sub-app not be pushed to Cadet Portal at present then?

No, just the main event at the moment.

I knew! I am a proud holder of an @aol.ca email account.

Do flying and gliding badges appear on the cadets’ ‘My Brassard’?

Nope.

I think AOL is still making an obscene amount of money on dial-up Internet.

Obviously the Wings aren’t on the brassard but would it be possible for them to be displayed alongside? Maybe the lanyards too?

I still claim credit for the virtual brassard idea

It would be good to see the jumper patch and the lanyard included mind.

Sorry @james_elliott for yet another question but how does Cadet Portal work with supernumerary cadets?

We have a couple on our unit during term time as they’re attending the university here.

Can they see events we post or can they only see things done/posted by their home squadrons? Both of their home Wings are in the Tranche 4 release but we were in the Tranche 2 release so presumably they haven’t got accounts at all yet?

(I/They haven’t been in at the same time since the launch so I haven’t been able to ask them directly)

No, but also yes

It’s something we need to in a better way…but here we go.

So, if the supernumerary cadet is invited and selected to an event the Sqn they are supernumerary on is running, their parent unit will get an event invite on SMS. If their parent unit clicks the ‘display in Cadet Portal’ for that invited event, the supernumerary cadet will see it in their Cadet Portal.

Now that is pretty messy and we know we need to do something better, but it is a bit of a fringe case and it will be quite a complex thing to develop.

So we’ve been using the uprated SMS and Cadet Portal and on the whole excellent - but some thoughts to the continued improvement process which is greatly appreciated!

Email notifications, should these be working for staff when they are selected/reserve etc for an event? Also seems to not be working for staff cadets added to the staff tab as opposed to the cadet tab.

Will there be a way to force cadets to provide additional information? Appreciate there is a ‘additional information to organiser’ box for them, could maybe a choice of three be provided (should the organiser wish to turn them on, individually) that are compulsory fields before bidding? Dietary seems to be the obvious (and important) issue, which weirdly isn’t recorded in SMS. Could it be? Multi activity camps (e.g. JNCO/SNCO/Radio/First Aid) camps would do well to have a ‘forced’ box too. Otherwise the only work round I could see would be for all courses to have a seperate PIPE, but then cadets could just bid to all of them and it could be rather messy… (Or cause the staff to have to send emails with preferences which would sort of undermine some of the labour saving we’re trying to achieve!)

Would it be possible to have some sort of six monthly prompt of cadets to review their data before they can bid for anything? Seems a good way of keeping the data more up to date if they have to periodically review like online banking does. Could either be automated at HQAC level at a set period, or perhaps OC Sqn could have a button to force a cadet/group/squadron to review?

From a Wing Level appreciate there is a ‘have the individual squadrons advertised’ display icon. Is there a way to ‘force’ it through to save the squadrons time? Is there a way of seeing what the individual squadrons have put for details to check it hasn’t been changed incorrectly in translation (which seems to frequently happen for one reason or another).

Hopefully this will help out - all in all impressed and continuing to see improvement!

@james_elliott

The average cadet parade strength figure on the dashboard… over what period is that average taken?

My average is apparently 10 to 15 less than the reality.
Our registers are upto date and correct.

My only guess is that the average goes back over the whole data set and more than 4 years therefore, letting idiot previous OCs poor efforts ruin the Sqns current good efforts.

I suggest that average should be capped as a 12 month average and labelled so.

Ditto for CFAV average parade strength.

Or Quarterly average?
