VC 10 - Farewell

VC10 - The Final Chapter
As the meritous, 50 year, service of the RAF VC-10 draws to a close, the last two aircraft (ZA147 and ZA150) will conduct their final air-to-air refuelling sortie, then diverge to carry out fly pasts of various locations around the UK, on Friday 20th September 2013.
The aircraft are expected to fly according to the following schedule:
ZA147 –
12.20 – Newcastle
12.40 – Warton
13.05 – RAF Coningsby (VC10 will be accompanied by a GR4)
13.15 – RAF Marham (VC10 will be accompanied by a GR4)
13.35 – Birmingham
ZA150 –
12.35 – RAF Lossiemouth (VC10 will be accompanied by a GR4)
12.55 - RAF Leuchars (VC10 will be accompanied by a Typhoon)
13.15 – Prestwick
Both aircraft are expected to return to Brize Norton by 13.45 for a final fly past at 14.00.
All times are local, and subject to change, based on the conditions of the day and aircraft availability.

I wouldnt hold my breath! :stuck_out_tongue:

On a serious note wish I could see some of this as I worked on the VC10 for a number of years and flew on them all over the world some very good memories with the queen of the skies! A great example of British engineering She will be missed.

Only ever flew in the VC-10 once and that was home from the Province in 1987. Sitting facing the back was interesting. She was a lovely aircraft and one I shall miss.

There is one (ZA148) now in residence at Newquay with the Classic Air Force.

Which is good. Two years ago, the only “firm” plan was XR808 going to Cosford, and we’ve seen what happened there.

That we may have a K3 preserved alongside a C1K at Bruntingthorpe (and whatever happens to '147 at Dunsfold), is good news.

By sheer coincidence, I arrived at Leuchars on Friday afternoon just in time to see the VC10’s departure. Sad day for the RAF, but an impressive sight. Never saw a Tiffie, but that might have pushed-off first.

I remember working on XR808 or as we called her BOB so what did happen to her?

Gone to Bruntingthorpe, probably as the “runner”. Originally ZD241 was to be preserved there, but I think 808 is correctly viewed as more significant.

Had good nosey round the VC10 at RIAT this year.Brought back some happy memories

I also spent many hours in the cockpit of a 10 Sqn VC10 flying back from Singapore in 1969 - Handy having an Uncle who was the Aircraft Captain.

Also did a few trips in the '70s when I was a cadet with 1249 Sqn @Swanton Morley…thanks again Uncle !
