So there’s 270 electoral college votes available which is an even number.
What happens if it’s a draw?
270 is the majority needed to win, 538 in total.
Ah gotcha - So what happens if both get 270 college votes ?
The official ‘simple majority’ is set at 270 for that reason - the winner gets 270, the loser 268
(This is taking me back to my undergraduate days and not in a good way!)
Is it physically possible to draw with each state giving varying electoral college votes? Assume it isn’t a simple each candidate gets 25 states each.
If people want more electoral college learning, there’s a few more good CGP Grey videos on the topic…
Or Crash Course US Politics gives you a good high level overview on the basics of the US Government and it’s workings.
I think some states do their divvying up of votes proportional but majority don’t
According to my US pollster/aggregator of choice (538), they only had 2 out of 1000 possible projections based on current polling that led to a tied result. It’s not likely.
What’s highly likely is that Harris will win the popular vote. It’s the electoral college that’s up for the taking. Remember, Clinton won the popular vote in 2016, so did Gore in 2000. Nonetheless, neither became President.
Much like our first past the post, not every vote is created equal.
Yes, Nebraska and Maine both issue one EC vote to the overall state winner, and one EC vote to the overall winner in each House district (not necessarily the same party as the member elected to the House for that district…)
I haven’t done the maths to see if that could lead to a tie. It’s not particularly likely, but I’m willing to eat my hat if this is my Michael Fish moment
What is Trumps record on delivering step change policy/manifesto promises?
He said he’d build the wall and Mexico will pay for it…
…except they didn’t pay for any of it…not that any extension is worth discussing.
With this tracl recoam i optimistic that we’ll not see the big step change influence he’s suggesting?
Isn’t even the nost powerful role on earth still required to gain permission from a committee (as a filter) to avoid big changes like these he’s suggested he’ll do…?
Or has my ignorance in how USA politics works showing through?
Yep, playing the game is important, it’s like Reform and the LibDems here, one party knows how to target its resources to get results, the other got a lot more votes but barely any seats.
Yes and no.
The President has genuine executive power, like a proper King, but he needs congress to pay for it. The issue we have here is that he has a stacked Supreme Court that would generally agree with him and a good shot of a friendly Congress. They might have separation of powers but that doesn’t mean much when they are all obedient,
Yes.
It’s exceptionally unlikely as it would require Kamala Harris to lose what’s essentially considered a safe seat, but it is possible for both candidates to finish on 269 Electoral College votes each.
In that scenario, a vote is taken in Congress. Each state gives 1 vote to whoever won their state. Republicans typically win more states, even if Democrats typically win more overall votes by headcount. This means a tie would basically equal a Trump victory.
Definitely getting Deja Vu to 2016 with the Democrat campaign HQ losing their enthusiasm as the night draws on.
I’m no politician but does seem like a poor choice for Kamala not to speak to her supporters at Campaign HQ even if she thinks she won’t win.
Fox have called Pennsylvania for Trump.
He’s won.
SDR needs to be shredded and rewritten, MOD and Space & Aerospace industry need to sit down and work out how to keep Trident working.
NATO is dead - forget about structures and agreements - does anyone (including Putin) think that a US under Trump/Vance will go to war with Russia over Estonia? No, so NATO is dead.
New plan. RTFN.
A very bad night Republicans have also got a majority in the Senate. Hopefully they won’t keep their majority in the House or Trump will have almost no constraints.
The world is a much more dangerous place.
CBS calling Pennsylvania for Trump too
Starmer has now got some grovelling to do!
By all accounts he’s already done it - he and Lammy had dinner with Trump a month or so ago. It over ran by at least an hour, and went reasonably well. Trump was, apparently, quite pragmatic.
Problem is, that Trump is in an administration that is rabidly anti-european, and pretty pro-Putin, he might be president, but he is one voice amongst many, and he’s a really lazy guy who’s very happy for others to do the work.
