UAS/RPAS (‘Drones’) on squadron

Sage wisdom and advice.

Of course not, that would be ludicrous.

So which is correct, as a CI is non-uniformed staff, yourself or has someone at HQAC ‘gold-plated’ the requirements??

So turns out the RAFAC UAS Operations Manual is available on SharePoint.
20230125-2 FTS OM Vol 1-V1.1 (MASTER)
There’s lots in it, and I don’t really have the time atm to fully take it all in (nor do I really have the technical knowledge to do so) but it does bug me that we use UAV, UAS and RPAS interchangeably (and RPAS and UAS in the first paragraph)

No mention of needing to be in uniform…

Also, there’s an album in there with some photos. Some of the photos quite clearly show over flying of people, which the policy explicitly says is not allowed

Where is this album please ?

It’s elsewhere. This manual contains our CAA compliance framework.

Transparency. Who would’ve thought it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

They are referring to the photos contained in this album, personally I think it’s “near to people” rather than “overflight”

Here .

Just looks like that photo shows the drone over the taxi way that the other photos clearly show people standing on!

RAvnO for C&E is incorrect! (Any others?)

Should be Wg Cdr Nick Gensler.

Was it correct as of August 23 or August 24?

I do wonder if that page, plus the list of qualified staff at the bottom, would be better as links to a SharePoint area. As is, any time someone changes post or a new person gets qualified you need to update the main policy document!

He was certainly in post Nov 2022 according to some email chains.

There was certainly no overflight. I was present for this and I can assure you there was no flying over people.

This sadly is a flaw of the document.

As I’ve said before, I own the decision for making this uniformed staff requirement.

With all due resepect, i think this is an oversight. We have mumerous occasions in the organisation that we have CIs with advanced qualifications in fields but we dont let them practice them because they dont want to wear the blue suit. In a recent training update from HQAC it was indicated that we were moving from rank/uniformed to experience based SME/instructors, this seems to go against the grain.

Just feels like the cadets are missing out when CI Bloggs who has every drone qualification known, now cant use those skills in the organisation because they dont have an appetite for uniform and just want to be a CI. Which is a loss for the organisation especially at a time where beggars cant be choosers with regards to volunteers.

But this is your trainset so ill pick my battles :joy: plus this stuff doesnt interest me

That’s not what is being said though, is it?
@JoeBloggs originally pointed out that members of the Regional Team have to be uniformed, which is different from “CI’s can’t supervise cadets flying drones”
