Interesting that we have a DSR due soon and our own Strategic Review getting underway.
That said the cost of the Cadet forces wouldn’t pay for much more than a Typhoon nose cone, a rear view mirror on an Ajax, and an Aldis lamp bulb
Be careful for what you wish for! Bean counters (Cummins, et al) will look for quick wins. So what will look best, unserviceable military platforms or a couple of groups of kids who could go and join the scouts and guides if they want to do something different with their life!
I know!
Nope get rid of Regions, they were the last thing invented and as they say LIFO. Put the admin CS into Wings, and get rid of RCs. A complete waste of taxpayers money.
Regions serve no purpose whatsoever and RSOs likewise. Better to keep management local ie Wings where there is a chance they may have a clue about the area. I’d also get rid of HQAC.
what would your preference for who’d take on the DDH role?
What do the sea and army cadets do? They must also follow this Duty holder model surely?
I’m sure OCs picking this up as part of their volunteering role and potentially being dragged through courts would go down like a lead balloon.
the obvious would be either down a level of permanent staff (so WExOs), or up a level, so COS is the DDH for the whole Corps…
Not paid enough for that malarkey.
Absolutely no chance of proper and detailed oversight.
Anarchist and anti-establishment, proletariat rebel that you are aside… How could that possibly work?
35 or whatever wings, all “the same”, but with no governing influence to pull them in the same direction? No one sat at the MOD lunch table, or sipping coffee with the Big Blue Cheeses at Cranwell, or snorting up canapés with whoever else greases wheels or provides things for us. All those entities of the same organisation, making their own rules, finding their own funding, arranging their own activities and providers…
You’re not that naive.
Jeez What will you come up with next? Get rid of the military in its entirety. 1000 squadrons running their own little empires?
I’m not a legal expert but I think in a court of law that would put HQAC is a position where they haven’t reduced risk by taking appropriate action, by having an effective DDH.
Not because the person isn’t capable of doing it they would argue one person isn’t appropriate for 900+ Sqns.
I appreciate that was poorly explained
Yeh - I agree with all of this! I was just extrapolating from a lack of RCs, not necessarily thinking either option was a good idea
I don’t think the RCs in their current position would ever have that either to be honest? Surely if there is a legal case it’ll be dealt with by the MOD legal guys and have basically nothing to do with HQAC, let alone RHQ?
Make the commandant and a deputy commandant at HQAC the DDH. Then they might actually DO something.
Or move 2 gp capts to HQAC to support that function. Still saving a shed load getting rid of 6 region HQs and all the other staff.
Pretty much what we have anyways.
In the early years the ADCC and ATC squadrons which had more cadets than we have had for many years, they did their own thing and in the days when even telephones were a rare thing in homes and due to a war personal vehicle travel wasn’t anything like it is now. These squadrons did what they were expected to and more We didn’t have Wings, sqns came together in an informal way for competitions. Wings didn’t exist and definitely didn’t have Regions and from what I’ve read the national headquarters wasn’t anything like it is now.
The management structure wasn’t needed then and not now. Squadrons do some really good things in local collaborations with no external interference. HQAC id it needs to exist, needs to be no more than a couple of officers and adminners. not several Gp Capts & Air Cdre. I know slthough not in the civil service, management structures in business have been reduced massively with no effect on output or anything else. So why it’s needed for what is only a national youth group, other than jobs for retirees, loses me, especially as it’s volunteers that do 99%+ of the work.
You are quite right in terms of direct costs but any further changes to the geographic spread of bases, support to RFCAs etc will impact to a greater or lessor degree.
Teflon,
If you wish to do more of your own thing then the Volunteer Cadet Corps might be more of your bag?
That is very true. We will have to wait out on this one. Some elements like a shift to cyber could fit well with what we do.
If it’s a coroners court they tend to like to call an individual, so if someone dies doing shooting for example the SPO and the DDH may well be called.
