Time between wing and region boards

Hola all

Happy new year.

I attended my wing board in October. The feedback I gained was very positive. As I was keen to try and implement any developmental feedback gained in the regional board, I asked for an estimation of how long it might take. They said it might take around 4 months before I get a regional board. This was because “ there is about three or four people in front of you”.

Whilst I don’t necessarily begrudge waiting months between boards (obviously it may have negative impact on preparation…. Essentially you have to prepare twice!), the fact that only three or four people are in front of me, yet it is estimated to be 4 months between Wing and regional board suggests that they only do one board interview per month?! I’m assuming this is quite common?

Doesn’t really seem like the organisation wants to get people into uniforms sometimes!

Depends on the region. Our region has set dates of the boards and it’s one everything 3 months (I think ) which means it can be a week before your region, or likewise 3 months if you just miss it.

What’s more frustrating is that the boards are during the day ……. Which for people who work during the day and can’t necessarily get it off!

You can theoretically join this organisation as a direct entrant into uniform. How would that work with such a delay between recruitment and selection stages?

Whilst the delay isn’t good, it is an improvement on the wait for OASC. That was often 6 months after the Wing filter interview. And it wasn’t uncommon to have to wait 3-4 months for one of those!

I had a very swift entry into the organisation* which involved a sector commander MSTeams chat and then the same with the RC.

I briefly met the wing commander already.

I really think this is something that needs to be quicker. We could even do away with direct entry officer unless you’re already commissioned just to speed things up so anyone waiting is already active within the organisation.

Months waiting on the outside is incredibly frustrating for people who are trying to give their time free of charge.

I’d be interested to know how many people actually fail things like DBS and basic appointment interviews (not including commissioning in that).

If the failure rate on the basics is as low as I expect, I imagine we could do a lot of this stuff concurrently, rather than waiting for one thing to complete before moving onto the next.

*after some messing around with different sets of forms, then having my SI application ended because I now needed to join as a CFC candidate in order to run the unit. Still pretty swift though.

It would depend on how many are going through the process in each Region.

C&E Region run boards every month, so anyone getting through their Wing board would be quickly boarded at Region.
