The use of intra squadron logos, e.g. Flight badges, Squadron Team badges

Hello. My squadron has flight logos that I made and would love to use for putting up in the squadron for our flight comp bord. As well as using them on a few squadron power points. I was wondering if there’s any regs on this and if we use them internally and unofficially on just my unit.

Internally you can do whatever you want as far as I’m aware.

People generally only start getting annoyed when you incorporate them into uniform (i.e. flight tags, flight markers on MTP blanking patches etc etc).

I also probably wouldn’t share them on external social media much to avoid falling foul of the heraldry and logos policies. Not sure if this is a hard rule or not though, as I haven’t read the Media ACP for a substantial period of time (it’s a gripping read though, maybe for Christmas Eve…?)

Ditto what @AMW said

golden rule is always dont break the rules, and if you have to - dont get caught

I do like that tbf, me and @OC.1324 were talking about a similar looking design for something unrelated a while ago

Would you mind sending the rest of your Flight “badges” in here, I’m just nosy

Very similar now I’ve gone back and checked

So we have “Harrier Flight” and “Buccaneer Flight” which have historically used red and yellow flight flashes, respectively.

It was great having those as a cadet because it developed that visible sense of having teams, but we don’t do that now because I need to set an example.

The issue with what you’re sharing is that this will very quickly run the risk of being incorporated into other uses, shared on social media etc and there’s arguably no point in creating those visuals if there aren’t legitimate ways to use the iconography.

So you’re using it as a profile photo here (which is fine and there aren’t explicit rules against it), but it does muddy the waters a bit and it absolutely looks like a patch.

Call things what you want but I’d honestly resist the urge to make graphics for everything.

Just to add and not dampen your spirits, they do look cool tbf…

In my RAFAC unit we have flats named after aircraft and on signs for their rooms, ORBATs, etc, there may be pictures of those aircraft: but in no way stylised as badges or patches: just photos of the aircraft in flight.

Meanwhile, in my reserve unit, some flts have unofficial badges (but, to be fair, so do the regular units we support).

One of my team are currently looking into lanyards with our traditional flight colours on the basis that:

  1. I wear my RAF Diversity Ally all the time and my ID is in it — no issues there.

  2. While we can’t give cadets name badges or other bonus uniform add-ons, lanyards are not only common place in the services, we could then put name cards in them to help with learning names.

So perhaps red lanyards for Harrier Flight, yellow lanyards for Buccaneer Flight, and white lanyards for our new joiners will be the way forward?

I’m certainly willing to consider it. Will need to consult our resident uniform expert as it’s a bit of a grey area and I care about getting it right. @AlexCorbin

Official routes to provide these ideas for consideration will be communicated in the new year

I have a theory that in 100 years or so, the lanyard will have been incorporated into official uniform in the same way that, say, aiguillettes or whistle cords have been - both of which were practical originally but have become entirely ceremonial.

They’ve already pretty much replaced ties in business attire.

Be a bit weird wearing a lanyard in my office of 9 people though… I’ll stick to a tie I think
