Sqn Subscriptions

I’m sure it’s been discussed many times but I’m just curious (like many things) where people are at with it. I’m sure we are looking at heading backwards by going back to weekly cash, for me it would always be monthly bank bonus if they do standing order.

I’ve got two areas I’m curious with

The wing level - what does your wing charge you for? There’s the mandatory GP fund - not sure how much is at core but I know we give our Wing £2.50 per cadet on Bader a month. Then ontop of that we pay into a sports fund at 66p a month and £1 a month to IACE (so many thoughts on both but that’s a whole different thread)

Then what have your Sqn chosen to go for overall so that you can cover your Sqn costs - both consumable and if you tap into it for any larger bits such as models, or tents etc

We are £10 a month by direct debit/standing order with £4 of that a month going up the chain to various stages including Wing/region/corps

£20 per month
£10 per month for Staff Cadets

I think it’s £3.50 up to WHQ for onward to HQ

We collect via GoCardless direct debit.

£10 per month. Managed via an online club payment system, which has been a lifesaver.

Prize for most expensive goes to…

And here was me thinking we were high at now £15 pm.

We’re £10/month, paid via Standing Order.

We were also £10/month when I became a cadet over 20 years ago, so probably due an increase.

£11.00 per month and everything is done via standing order.

We are certainly the cheapest ‘youth club’ around, especially given what we offer.

If anything shows how cheap you are!

Think about what other youth org charges as little as cadets do for so much? Even if it’s just 8 parade nights a month that’s dirt cheap childminding!

I think we are the highest in the wing, however we did subsidise the RIAT trip for our cadets and the £6 increase we implemented in April resulted in no pushback from any parents.

It is also being sidelined to a new bank account for the ongoing maintenance and replacement minibus.

I also think it’s exceptional value for 20 hours of organised activity a month, which is before we add in any weekend activity.

We’re £8 a month, paid directly into the bank account. I think we’re due an increase, seeing they get two nights a week plus something pretty much every weekend. Compared to other clubs in the area we’re by far the cheapest.

I was wonder how they funded the Don Perigon at canteen break

Obviously every squadron does it differently and rightly has the autonomy to do so, but charging anything for staff cadets has never really sat right with me.
Most of them are either uni or early careers and either way money is usually exceptionally tight. Granted, CivComs should take stuff like that into account on a case by case basis, but a blanket no subs for staff cadets policy has always worked well for us. I was living fairly paycheck to paycheck as a trainee and I’m not sure I would’ve stayed on the extra 2 years if it was chargeable beyond buying myself new boots etc. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to go begging to the CWC, and I doubt I would be a CFAV today.
After all, if staff cadets are being selected and managed well they should be putting significant value back into the squadron in non-monetary and voluntary terms anyway.
When you consider the lack of VA for VA-worthy activities, lack of fuel reimbursement even for transporting cadets etc it’s even more questionable - granted a lot of this may change with Mondays impending announcement but who knows until we see it…

It’s their parents who are paying for them still, the cadets aren’t themselves.

Let’s see how staff cadets land on Monday.

We charge £10 per month on standing order. Some parents generously opt to pay twice to help our less fortunate cadets.

Slightly off topic (but still subs related) who tends to oversee the collection/badmin? My feeling is that its a Civ Comm responsibilty…

I’ve been Adj at two different units and both times I worked with the treasurer on overseeing subs. Normally just a sit down every few months to compare cadets who are attending vs subs being paid into the bank. Then anyone who wasn’t paying got a reminder from me/the treasurer.

For us it’s £20 for all cadets, including staff cadets, and families with multiple cadets, like my sister and I.

Interesting latest post on VoP - Unpaid Subs

Not a problem we have locally at my unit, we have everybody signed up (GoCardless) before they join in night 1, this initial payment covers the sqn T Shirt we issue.

That said, given all that is really lost is what’s been paid up to Wing and above, in this case I’d be encouraging the committee to write that off and not expend the energy.

99.9999999% of Sqns will just write it off. Does pose the question though, what juristiction our civ coms actually have when it comes to “chasing debts”. Id be suprised if theres actually any.

I would say that if anyone tried to test it, it probably falls into some legal interpretation of a voluntary donation.

There’s no contract, and it can and is waived or reduced where there is an inability to pay.

Then there’s the headlines… "Air Cadets Threatens Food Bank Family over £120 ‘Debt’ "
