Sqn Formation Date

Hi all,

Could anyone advise me on hotw to find the exact date when Squadrons were formed?

Many tahnks

Turn your COs chair over and have a look at the supply date.

Seriously, it should be on the copy of your Royal Warrant. Failing that Wing HQ may be able to ascertain the date or ask the relevant people at HQAC. If it’s for something like funding, putting the formation date of the ATC won’t harm.

i am the CO, lol

I had a look on the Royal Warrant but no date on it which I thought strange.

I’ll try and find someone at HQAC then.

cheers

Ask Wing they should have a list of COs and appt dates.

Your CWC may have the information, which if it’s an old sqn they might have got minutes, dating back to the year dot. My original sqn did and they were interesting reading.

Alternatively if you’ve got a local museum or your council has something like a local history worker.

Your local library might have back issues of local papers which OK a bit of work, might be fruitful, but do this as a last resort.

Don’t bother with HQAC, they’ve always denied any knowledge of sqns having a history. We don’t exist.

We also tried to get our Sqn formation date from HQAC a few years ago, with no luck.

Apparently it is the responsibility of individual Squadrons/Wings to maintain unit history records.

Which squadron are you interested in…

Is it a 2000+ squadron number, or closer to 1000?

The highest number allocated by end of April 1941 was probably to 1290 Sqn in Staffordshire
