SLC Part 1

Good evening,

I am booked on to SLC Part 1 this month and am wondering if their is anything I can/should do to prepare for this and what, if anything, I’ll need on the day?

Thank you.

I would expect the Joining Instructions offered for the course will give you all in the information you require…

What’s an SLC Part 1 course?

Staff Leadership Course? (I have no clue…)

Standard Learning Credits?

CEYorks Wing run it as Staff Leadership Course, an introduction into the process and knowledge required for becoming a uniformed CFAV. It’s designed to help CFAVs decide on which route is best for them.

Bring a notebook and pen(s) and be prepared to get involved in discussions and a couple of other syndicate activities.

Thank you, I thought that might have been all that was required to bring.

We call this a ‘pre uniform course’. Heard it called other things too. Would be good if these things were standardised a bit. If nothing else to save multiple different groups reinventing the wheel over and over again.

Yeah, when I went through going into uniform many, many years ago, it was called Uniformed Staff Course. I guess it boils down to what the current lead staff want to call it.

You’re supposed to be able to join as a direct entry SNCO, so any course that has to be taken as a CI before going into uniform goes against that.

Is it a weekend at anb RAF Station or just a day? when I did my PUSC as a Cdt FS it was just a day at a central (ish) Sqn, but I’ve heard of some that are a Weekend at Cranwell or some other Station?

In general I find staff personal development (barring the nationally organised CIC/UCC etc) so frustratingly inconsistent from wing to wing.

Some wings do it brilliantly (I’ve moved to a wing that does), but I’m sure it’s something that would rather benefit from a little bit of national standardisation across Wgs/Rgns to more of an extent than it is currently.

In my wing, even post COVID, it’s literally just a teams call, about an hour or two.

It briefly covers differences between SNCO and Officer, a quick overview of what to prepare for at filter interview and Regional board, and what to expect at CIC.

The latter part was largely about how not to make a tit out of yourself in the mess…

Same, and the overwhelming feedback was “this could have been a teams call”
