Sir Chris - and Sashes!

Was browsing through our official RAF website the other day and found this article on Sir Chris Hoy’s first outing in uniform.

Fantastic to see the new Gp Capt out and about inspiring our young people; a good choice in my opinion.

One thing that struck me however, was bearing in mind the amount of notices there have been in Orders recently (certainly in my Wg anyway) reminding us about canes, pace sticks and sashes, could someone from S&NI Region explain the sash the young lady is wearing? Is it associated with the award she’s getting from Sir Chris as you can’t see the certificate properly?

It is the Andrew Sash - the regional award for the Best Female Cadet of the year.
It is being worn from presentation purposes and isn’t worn at any other time.

The best male gets the Purdie Sword - he isn’t pictured, possibly as he had timed out and was in civvies. The male cadet in the article is getting the award for best VGS staff cadet.

Thanks Incubus, thought it might have been you that came back!

The article didn’t say what she was being awarded hence my question whether the two were linked.

Because I live glued to ACC, because I’m from the region, or because I was standing not 10m to the left when it was taken?

Yes.

I suspect that there are very few on here who would dispute your first statement Incubus and I assumed your second to be the case due to other posts you have made. However, being a Southern Shandy-drinker and therefore not one who was in the presence of such exulted company, I had no idea your third comment to be so! :worthy:

Have they done it on the cheap and given him No1s without a belt… or is it just sagging enough for the black plastic button to show?

Saggy belt unfortunately. Sure it will have been noticed and will be rectified

It was ill-fitting and saggy/squint. Hopefully they’ll get that sorted for him.
I think his hat was inherited or found tucked down the back of a sofa.

Nice guy though - didn’t appear to tire of a continual horde of people wanting to say hello or have their photo taken with him.

I take it that the medal ribbon he’s wearing is that of his MBE?

I’d wondered that as well.

Yup - civil ribbon for his MBE.

He is also entitled to wear a Knight Bachelor’s badge round the neck but it was a “no danglies” event.

Wonder why he hasn’t got his KB ribbon on there as well?

I’d probably read the post above yours then

I did.

No danglies is different to no ribbons. The ribbon is worn all the time on No 1s, but you would only wear the badge itself when full orders and medals are worn.

I have no idea. It seems that KB is afforded ribbon.

It just appears odd that’s all. He is both a KB and a civil MBE, but only wears the ribbon of the lower order.

I would guess that HQAC sorted his uniform out for him - ah, that’ll be it then!

Last post edited to add: from the website of the Imperial Society of Knights Batchelor, that there IS an entitlement to wear the ribbon of the KB in undress uniform:

6. UNIFORM: FULL DRESS: A Knight Bachelor should wear his neck badge suspended from its ribbon and may wear his breast badge as an Order Star on the left breast, according to the regulations of the appropriate Service. His medal bar should not, of course, include the badge of a Knight Bachelor.

UNDRESS: Neither breast badges nor neck badges are worn but ribbons sewn to the jacket may include the full width ribbon of a Knight Bachelor, having precedence as in 1. above.

N.B The above advice is based on A Guide to the Wearing of Orders, Decorations and Medals (Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood) and applies in the United Kingdom. In other realms of HM The Queen, local variations may apply.

I stand corrected - Chris IS entitled to wear the ribbon of his KB in No.1 HD.

Exactly, great news.

Intrigued that Gp Capt Hoy’s not wearing VRT collar-titles: presumably he will be comissioned into the Training branch of the RAFVR, like our other excellent HGC, the amazing Bill Walker?

A full hat-trick treble?
