Hello all!
So I’ve now joined the ranks of adult SNCOs yay me, anyways my question to you all is can anyone explain to me the entitlement of service days and how to go about telling your boss that you have an extra entitlement away from work?
Thanks
Whiskey
Dead easy.
We don’t have any additional entitlement to time off.
There is however a letter somewhere on Bader which is explains the roll of the ATC and seeks to encourage management to allow time off where possible.
I’ve no idea what it actually says, I’ve never used it.
Edit…Oh hang on, re-read your post. Are you talking about receiving extra paid days?
In that case, you are entitled to claim 1 day remuneration for a period of duty of 8 to 24 hours inclusive. This can include traveling time but time at the place of duty must be at least 4 hours.
i.e. If you drive 2 hours to duty, do 4 hours there, and drive two hours back - that’s a day’s pay.
You can claim 28 such days per year.
No need to tell your boss. You receive your annual tax allowance via Pay As You Earn (PAYE) on the salary from your normal job. HMRC class your ATC pay as an additional income.
HQAC will deduct tax on behalf of HMRC at Basic Rate (is it still 20%) before paying you.
Some employers will have written in their personnel regulations that employees that are also a member of the reserve forces or cadets are entitled to additional leave for service training. This is not mandatory for the employer to provide this although any organisation who respects what the Armed Forces do will cater for those employees via either paid or unpaid leave.
Anyone in the civil service is entitled to 5 days paid special leave for cadet duties (very good for attending camp without losing your leave entitlement for family etc!). Officers are actually entitled to a little bit more for personal development training too. There is a DIN somewhere which explains it. Fortunately where I work the cadet option is actually built into our annual leave system!
Have a look in your work’s HR documents to see if you’re entitled. If not, do as w2b has suggested and take the Comdt Air Cadet’s letter with you to work to at least support applying for unpaid leave.

Not actually correct. Sadly some Departments have written it out and now exclude SNCOs from the description (“members of RAFVR(T)”) etc. You can try and swing unpaid special leave for volunteering but it’s at the allowance of the Dept.

Work for the MOD!! Extract from our Special Leave Policy -
MOD Sponsored Cadet Forces Training
-
SPL may be granted for MOD sponsored Cadet Force training if you are a full-time staff member. Cadets, instructors or officers in the MOD Cadet Forces may be allowed special leave for up to one working week in any leave year for attendance at camp, or special instructional courses provided they are held under Service auspices.
-
If you are an adult instructor or commissioned officer of the MOD sponsored Cadet Forces and you are required to undergo a course in addition to attending cadet camp, you may be allowed special leave for the course within the limits of the permitted allowances for voluntary members of the Reserve Forces.
So in theory, you can get more than the 5 days; its all down to wording and interpretation of what you say and write

Now that’s a contentious statement…
More organisation (a police force) allows 5 days Special leave for reserve forces - However they only count RAFVR as entitled to the extra leave so if you’re a SNCO(ATC) - tough luck - you have the same entitlement as a scout leader!

Indeed, and if I were a member of the armed forces I might fell aggrieved that my company does not grant me extra holidays. As it is I tend to only use all my 29 annual days of paid leave on my hobby anyway and often struggle to take it all.
