There will be a reshuffle when Starmer goes anyway so everyone is just temporary at the moment and knows it. Those who are going are doing a big if virtue signalling in the hopes of a job in the next Government.
That would be a very clear message. We’ll wait and see!
Apparently Carns resigned after Jarvis was appointed, and Healey told his ministers to stay in post.
I think it unlikely - he’s already put out messages about remaining apolitical and suspect this course of action, warranted as it would be, could be acting against his own words.
Just read that the resignations have been triggered due to the size of funding shortfall.
Defence asked for £28bn, Government pledged £13.8bn - less than half of what was asked for.
Whilst it would be a 22% increase by 2030, versus the £60bn currently spent, inflation has been running between 2.5% - 10% annually for the past few years. Assuming a bad year ot two for the economy, this could easily be a “stand still” budget increase.
I read somewhere that it was only due to rise from 2.6% to 2.68% by 2030: well short of the 3.5% agreed at NATO.
And they’re including Security in that too, another farcical accounting trick by Reeves. When has part of the Home Office ever been included in defence?! Disgusting.
The headline figure for the defence budget used to exclude the nuclear deterrent, pensions, veterans care, the intelligence agencies, etc. – and it was still 4%+
There was some quite shoddy reporting last night from the Been, we had Penny Mourdaunt and the Department of Defence! ![]()
Both now corrected
This is the sort of delusion within the Labour party around defence. Make no mistake - should conflict arise, people will die as a result of these extremely naive and dangerous views.
The fact that “only some accounts can reply” says a lot.
It suggests that the people putting these messages out there don’t believe them, and are worried people with competence in the area may share their views openly.
He’s got Sandher-Jones’ job, and she’s got Al’s
Not resigning, but also quite clearly not happy. I think he’s been as political as he can be here without becoming political.
All will be revealed tomorrow:
Long-delayed defence investment plan to be published on Tuesday - BBC News
Which will last 3 weeks - AB has publicly said it’s not enough..
You can see how KS gets his reputation as a stiff necked
Apparently he’s seen it and rubber stamped it - whether that’s true or not I don’t know, and I can’t find where I saw that now
So 13bn short then?!
