COMPLETELY HYPOTHETICALLY AND APOLITICALLY (please don’t just comment that it won’t happen) What would happen to Scottish cadets if Scotland got independence? I don’t know if it would just remain RAFAC or if it would be linked but under the Scottish armed forces. Is there a plan?
I think the real answer is that we have absolutely no idea and I’ll be very surprised if there are any plans for such a hypothetical.
I did write some ideas, but then I deleted them because the list of possibilities under such a scenario is so long it’s not helpful — it’s just guesswork.
Thanks for the answer. I am also surprised that there is absolutely no plan. I know that with it being a possibility both people for and against the vote are worried.
The government doesn’t plan for stuff like that. Look at Brexit.
However, I think looking at countries like Ireland and Iceland would be a good indication.
I’d say it’s not that surprising.
We’re struggling for capacity with the CS recruitment freeze continuing to bite. We couldn’t realistically justify planning for something which might not happen and, if it does, will need a transitional phase anyway.
There are so many unknowns that this organisation couldn’t realistically plan anything anyway.
Besides, it’s not HQAC’s remit - it’s up to the SNP/Leave campaign people to plan. It won’t be anything to do with the RAF/UK Govt.
Clearly youre not privvy to the inner sanctum of hqac planning.
Operation Thruster, clearly sets out the immediate baseline and next steps in the event of a positive vote for Scottish seperation.
A key tenant, being, the immediate issuing of No7s to all personnel (Kilts with wedsgewood and tie.)
Of course 7a as you know, requires a form from Reg HQ, as its Kilt with Sqn polo and beret.
The above can now be released as the close hold date ended recently.
Questions direct to Rafac POLSEC.
You missed out that volunteers brought in to enable the operation will be referred to as ‘Thrusters’ to make it clear to everyone that they’re involved in something very important.
Are we, er, are we done with sensible responses?
There’s no real answer because what will happen will be dependent on how other, much bigger things pan out, as well as the atmosphere that the negotiations and the eventual separation happen.
It’s like me telling you to pack for a destination - but I can’t tell you where it is, what kind of climate it has, how long you’ll be there, if you’ll have access to food or water or shelter, and what hazards - natural and man made - you’ll face.
My own view is that the answer might be ‘it will probably be roughly the same’ in the short term, and then things might change.
Which is pretty worthless…
I almost wonder (I’m aware it’s not happening) if some kind of RAFAC decoupling from the CS would be beneficial. Having non-FTRS staff like pillar leads being directly employed by the RAFAC instead of being CS?
My GUESS (and it’s very much a guess) would be that if the Air Cadets survived Scottish independence, it would be on the Sea Cadets model - i.e. moving to a separate self-supporting charity with minimal government support.
Honestly, compared to the question of how Scotland would or would not defend itself, it’s just noise…
If in that case, Scottish cadets like myself, would probably just lose the RAF connection and revert back to the ATC then turning into something else maybe Scottish Air Cadets or any other funny name we’d give it,
but would it effect RAFAC as a whole? Probably not,
only things I could imagine changing is SNI would turn into just NI (or NI would merge with another region, probably Wales n West) and we’d probably lose 661 VGS and the two UAS respectively.
Aslong as we lose UGSAS I’m happy to vote Yes today
Horrible, Dirty, Petulant people
