I think they are provisioned, however unlike Flight Staff Cadets what they can do is very limited.

Can’t Teach the courses

Can’t hold any enabling qualifications

Can’t fill any range staff roles.

So what they actually do I don’t know :man_shrugging: they get a fancy patch though

They can mop the billets?

Can cadets do any coaching courses?

They can do the FCC

But they can’t teach it, so the usefulness of FCC for a SATT cadet’s rather limited.

3WW had them in the early 2000s. Trained as safety sups, ammo orderlies, assist with the training and concurrent activities. It took a lot of the pressure off staff so they could run the range and train. We were then told it was not allowed for most of that. It got very boring for them after that, made it easier for the CFAV though

Cadets can still act as coaches (assuming they’ve passed the course) just not any of the other roles.

Maybe not in the here and now… but it’s about developing and maturing our cadets who want to develop onto that role when they commission/appoint.

They can sit in on the SAAI courses, support the administrative sides, logistics. (Obviously, can’t be a driver/escort)

I get that they can’t be a body on the range from an appointment, but can learn and develop.

Once appointed, makes them a valuable CFAV.

Back in the day (grabs sandbag, starts swinging lantern), as a Senior Cadet i was supporting IWT, as a demo troops, learning from the WI’s, when I went and did my courses, it was easier and more quickly understood as I had lived it.

I’ve got some senior cadets now that turn up to the ranges because they want to develop others shooting ability. One recently attended an IWT course on a wpn they are a silver shot on… to relearn skills and see how the instructional side is. Learning some of the skills and tips we employ as a SAAI…

SWR used to have one… now on strength as a CFAV instructor

I distinctly remember being an ammo orderly, safety supervisor, and coach as a cadet. The RCO was a CWO and there was a newish CI joining in with the shooting whilst cadet NCOs ran the range.

Disallowing cadets being ammo orderly definitely came in in my time, and I did my first RCO course in c.2006. Initially the requirement was that cadet ammo orderlies should be SNCOs; then it was banned.

I would give the world to have cadets permitted to be ammo orderly with air rifle pellets…..!

Problem is having cadets on SATT courses instantly means headaches. For instance, extra accommodation, and that’s assuming you don’t have a mix of U18 and O18 which will need even more.

And it’s quite hard to think of reasons why that wouldn’t be OK. Other than setting a precedent for .22 and 5.56 ranges, I guess.

Why do you need an ammo orderly with air rifles? The RCO can keep 10 shoots worth in their pockets. If your SPO or TSA is stipulating you must have an ammo CFAV for pellets, tell them to give themslesves a wobble.

Only “where practical”

‘Cos it says so in the RSD -& we use single shot Scorpions (plans in progress to try & upgrade, but the multi-shot is £519 via BSA / RAFAC!).

Have you actually asked anyone if an ammo orderly is required, or just blindly followed? Having worked with two TSAs they have both agreed the RCO can be responsible for the pellets.
