Rocketry Project

Anyone do one?

I know we need extra insurance, but is it worthwhile?

Got any information they’d like to share etc?

Love and Kisses.

It something I looked at last year but we couldn’t get it going at the Sqn.

I was mainly looking at it to compliment the ultilearn topic and thought it might be helpful but the local logistics and the fact it got very complicated very quickly meant we decided to go with something else intead.

There’s something in the ACTO 75 about speaking to TG3 and joining the British Model Flying Association.I do know that some rocket motors require an explosives certificate issued by the police. Whether cadets have the same exemption as the rest of the RAF is a bit grey as there is no specific mention of cadet corps in the explosives act or COER/MSER (as apposed to the firearms act where it states quite clearly when cadets are crown servants).

Best thing on this side would be to ring your local Police Explosive Liaison Officer or licensing department and ask them to confirm. There is also some info on the HSE Website if you search their site for ‘rocket motors’

Hope this helps

Excellent, thank you. And a great first post

PM inbound.

We did it a few years back.

Insurance is via BMFA. Motors upto class C don’t require any licence, and to be honest, even a C class is enough to get a small rocket a couple of hundred meters up.

Main things are that you need a big area to fly them in - 2-3 football fields in size as the recovery is a bit haphazard depending on wind. You’ll also need a competent person to supervise. You can do the UKRA (UK Rocketry Association) tests and get qualified, but the easiest thing would be to contact a local club and see if they have anyone willing to assist. Check the UKRA website for local clubs.

It’s good fun, and not overly expensive. Simple estes rocket kit is about £30 and motors are about £5 for 4 (I think, it’s been a while).
