Hi, does anyone have a risk assessment for the storage of flammable substances on unit premises please? Just wanted to check before starting from scratch. Thanks a lot
Although not what you are looking for.
We in the end (and most squadrons in my wing) no longer store anything flammable on the premises, i keep the sqn gas canisters and trangia fuel at home and there are a couple of bits my staff keep at home. We keep a document of who has what and its a lot easier than keeping it at the sqn and the associated paperwork it involves.
I have the squadron flammables stored in my (locked) shed , along with my own flammables like mower fuel, gas, meths etc. All 50ft from house.
NO paperwork, NO hassle, NO inspections, NO POL cabinet to look after!!
I do keep it all separate from my own stuff and there is a list.
Sooooo much easier than keeping it on the squadron!!!
You should NOT be storing anything flammable on the Squadron premises, so seek advice from your Wing H&S Co-ordinator.
Um, go read ACP5, HS&EP Procedure 9
Outside in an appropriate fire cabinet is fine - as the gold H&S certificate on my wall will attest.
i guess that is why we’re now a “paperless” organisation
Yes, that’s what we need one for. We want the gold star, pointless as it may be. We don’t hold any flammable substances on squadron but it’s the only item preventing us from getting a gold star…
That is hilarious, you want to effectively add risk to mitigate said risk and then get a higher H&S audit score.
The ATC really needs a reality check
All that paper, uniforms stores etc plus I suspect a 24/7 electric srunning.
And this just proves how a point based H&S system does not work. Well done ATC.
H&S needs to be looked at individually and holistically everywhere, it is not just a tick box exercise. Personally I feel awarding prizes etc for H&S compliance is wrong, safety is the only prize. Creating a system and environment where people only want to get the next level of award risks diverting focus away from what is really important.
We just put a big sign up in the store and the COSHH Cabinet saying no flammable substances to be stored and that was it… Gold star awarded!
Sounds like the best way forward, thanks.
just thinking are you getting mixed up with a fire Risk Assessment?
The requirement is that flammables are stored appropriately; not that the Sqn has a flammables locker.
If you don’t have any flammables (of the kind that ACP 5 worries about) then not having a flammable locker is not a bar to a gold star.
I don’t have a flammable’s locker on my Sqn, anything like gas canisters etc are kept at home in the shed.
I do have a Gold Star though.
I only know one squadron with “flam bin”, everyone else keeps it at home and brings it as and when needed. The one I know of keep household cleaning fluids in it (which is lost on me) as well as flammables, the former is lost on me. I would have thought RFCA putting one in, would take ages, judging by how long things take.
The problem with the flam bins is they are outside the building and exposed to the ranges of temperatures and moisture, which can affect things stored for long periods. At least in a garage they are in stable environment.
