A last hurrah before the city council finally gets its 60+ year wish come true and builds over it?

God help us - traffic is bad enough in Newmarket Road!

Well, part of the group is moving:

Snowdonia Space Centre is where it’s at; bags of space. Good flight line. Big runway. Camping at Shell Island.

Very true - I used to hate having to go there for Herc and Tristar meetings because of the traffic.

My vote is RAF Luton.

It would be nice to see their Canberra squadron do a display.

Correct, I took my eldest to it about 12/15 years ago - it was actually a really good air show - despite the relatively small site, they crammed a lot in.

Have sent you a PM

Well the Red Arrows won’t need as much space.

Gave up summer camps on RAF bases years ago as you spend more time doing off base activities.

What about Finningley? Big runway and the site is currently being recommissioned.

I bet that they’re still a bunch of douchebags…

Wake up at the back of the class!

Did 3 stints at Finningley, one for my AEOp trg, then for multi-eng pilot trg (wearing an AE brevet = got taken for staff a lot of the time, very handy!) & some yrs later, a multi-eng refresher after gnd tour.

ditto - and the clock keeps ticking for the O18s

I’m sure they also speak highly of you.

I hold no particular brief for the Red Arrows, I have known quite a few of them over the years some I would be happy to have a beer with, others I’d cross the road to avoid. Pretty much the same with any squadron.

In the 1970-80s there were many displays and open days. Every man and his dog had a display team; remember the Pelicans, Poachers, Blades, Gin and of course the once seen never to be forgotten Whales; the RN Sea King team? I remember a couple JP teams causing havoc with the FTS flypro when it would be announced at 1300 that there would be a practice display at 1530. Those days are gone along with all those flying displays.

Back then, the Red Arrows and the various formation teams served a purpose and we had the resources and could afford them. Nowadays we haven’t resource or funds and I have listened but heard no convincing argument that we even have a need for what is left.

Is it time to park the Hawks on those carriers and sail them off into the sunset? Then we could get on with the serious business of defence.

General public morale is part of the serious business of defence - air displays were & still are an easy way to build that proganda tool.

The serious defence question is ā€œwhat is the training aircraft the RAF is going to use?ā€ Now the public won’t understand the significance of that but they WILL understand how it links to the red arrows.

However I do feel that the reds has become a little stale & part of it I think is the culture that has grown within the RAF of ā€œits only my problem for a short timeā€

Hopefully this will force the red to change & do something different

The serious question of defence when our government, any government starts putting some serious money into it. We evidently have 1 million idle youngsters not training, not in education, presumably sat on their backsides drawing benefits! I am sure that lots would not be suitable for the armed forces but surely give an incentive and they could sort two issues in one go. I am sure lots of them could be good drone pilots with their x-box skills!
Rachel Thieves latest announcements are just a give away and not directed at those really in need!

The whole mindset of the country needs to change and those idiots who govern us!
