RIAT 2022 and 2023

My visit… my rules

That used to be the way, people are far more forgiving these days.

Are they? Not so I’ve noticed!

When we went as a Squadron group we never wore uniform.

you say that but i haven’t seen the IBN or LM about day visiting Squadron instructions that used to go out indicating the instructions (rules) to follow in particular how to deconflict with those on the RIAT camp
(it was a document that ensured consistency thus those attending for the day were not disciplined by CFAVs on the RIAT camp for not following rules that those on the camp had set)

I’ve always seen a mixture of No. 2s, 3s, 3As, berets, baseball caps, etc, etc.

I think I might do that, as I’m concerned of the lack of MTP Waterproofs or walking around in a smock all day.

Weather currently looking less than ideal

The RIAT welcome party always used to whinge, they were generally told to bore off as we were camping.

I don’t have blues waterproofs - unless the GPJ counts?

And that is exactly why I’m considering Civvies now rather than the original plan of Blues

GPJ isn’t very waterproof, okay for limited time exposed to light showers at best. You can carry a black umbrella in uniform though.

Anyone going to Fairford this weekend is going to be by the middle of the day. The GPJ might hold out the showers and wind (look at those gusts, that’s when it’ll rain), but trousers/skirts/tights, socks and shoes will be soaked through.

It’s not going to be that warm either - wet, bit knackered, and that windchill…?

If you’re going for the day, you can strip off your wet gear, put a dry trackie on and sit in the bus in comfort knowing your stuff can go on the radiator at home while you’re having a hot shower.

If you’re camping?

How are children going fair when they get wet on Friday, and have to wear those wet clothes and shoes for the rest of the weekend?

Civvies, with waterproofs and air cadet hi-viz jackets, or MTP with waterproofs. Put them in blues and you’re going to have problems…

Also are we even allowed to wear them?

Ours will be in civvies for the weather reasons. Either it’s too hot, and so blues/mtp and boots don’t work, or it’s cold and wet and neither give protection.

CFAV can, cadets can’t. That’s what I remember ACP 1358 saying.

Without wishing to come across as a bluff old conservative on this issue, I rather take the view that anyone who won’t allow children to wear waterproofs while standing around all day in the howling rain because a book says so probably ought not to be involved in a youth organisation.

I’d take a look at their hard drive as well, just to be sure…

Safety and wellbeing of young people should be our first and foremost priority (without leading to unnecessary pauses…), but sadly there are some in the org who think the rules are there to be kept regardless of the consequences.

And I’d absolutely agree with you that those people have no right to be a part of RAFAC.

Are we getting mixed up with our outwear?

GPJ is not waterproof, and is a staff only item.
Jeltex is waterproof and issued to cadets
Gortex is Waterproof and issued to neither!

I haven’t been issues with any outerwear for blues other than the GPJ.

From memory we are scaled for a waterproof jacket and certainly I was told it is the goretex not the Jeltex.

We have also been given highly specific guidance on what we can and cannot wear for RIAT, which without going into details goes against CI training

And you are only protecting the top half of the body, nothing worse than wet trousers clinging to the legs and are there any drying facilities for wet/damp clothing?
