Returning after resignation

Hi all

Looking for some advice - a couple of years ago I had to leave the UK due to work commitments - so I had no choice but to resign my commission.

I am due to return to the UK early next year - does anyone know what the process would be if I wished to go back into uniform?

Thank you

Similar thing happened to me. This was about 7 years ago but I went to the local unit and was a CI for a couple of months. I then did all the paperwork and had a 1 on 1 with OC wing and the same with Regional Commendant. Not a formal board process they just wanted to get some background etc.

Couple of weeks later my commission was granted.

The process has changed somewhat now. Whilst you satisfy the Nationality requirements, you residency requirements are going to be a sticking point.

You certainly won’t be walking into a uniformed post. I would suggest you make contact with a Wing HQ to ask them to discuss the matter with HQAC staff prior to you approaching a unit.

Good luck.

Hypothetical question - does the 5 years for CRB apply to cadets too?

Be a bit of a shame to have a cadet (who could well be British) move [back] to the UK at 14/15/16, serve as a cadet and then be kicked out because they can’t be CRB’d.

Also, how does ‘residency’ affect the offspring of forces personnel serving overseas?

I suppose it all depends on where you are moving from? As for cadets that would be a shame.

i’d like to think if pareents were sent oversees they would be classed as being on “British soil” when staying on camp and thus the residency would still be UK based…however that would make sense so likihood is its not that simple!

Yes. Why would it not? DBS don’t differentiate between someone who is 18 and someone who is 22 (random age example)

You might be on “British soil” but you have entered the boundaries of another country through their Immigration. Therefore…

“Lead Commands are authorised to risk manage their residency requirements for initial entry CFAVs”

It depends if they consider rejoiners “Initial entry”

So how do our staff that run overseas Sqns get on? I assume BFG, Gib & Cyprus as considered the UK?

Thinking about it, my mates at 7OS (Jersey) are going to have to resign their commissions as they haven’t been living in the UK!

Having served in both Cyprus and Gibraltar, I can say that when I flew into Akrotiri (to the best of memory) we went through British controls and not through the host country’s. In Cyprus, the British presence in Akrotiri and Episkopi was classed as the Sovereign Base Area or SBA.

Although Gib is a commercial airport, we went through British passport control (I even got my passport stamped) as it is still classed as sovereign territory.

Is my living in NZ for 8months… Dec2010 -Aug2011 during my flight training going to put a spanner in the works for my initial application for commision?

Probably an 8mm spanner. It will probably get through, but it will require an extra dose of looking at. You will probably be required to display evidence of where you were and what you were doing. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Be up front with it.

James Blonde, I hope you’re reading all of this really helpful information wherever you are…

when I was in Germany and a few other overseas places as long as you had a BFPO address Legaly you are still classed as a UK resident so it wouldn’t be an issue

5 years residency is not a strict requirement as far as the CRB/DBS is concerned. There is some flexibility in the system. I know this because I came back into the organisation in 2011, some 6 months after I returned to the UK after spending the previous 10 years in the United States. It all depends on how deeply they want to dig and how easy it would be. I was in the same city, so there wasn’t much of an issue and my CRB clearance came back no later than anyone else’s did at the time. (i.e. ******g ages.)
