Return to VRT

I have been invited back after 15yrs away from Cadets.
Will I need to don the white tabs and re do initial course?

I’ve just had a look at the commissioning blurb in ACP 20, and the following points are noteworthy in your case. Also note, that since you left, Officers are required to attend Officer & Aircrew Selection Centre at Cranwell, although it looks like this could be waived too:

Therefore, it is open to interpretation as to whether you may need to go to OASC, but it looks like you won’t need to go to OIC (although it may well be worthwhile), which in turn would mean you wouldn’t be wearing white tabs.

All sounds well and good, however, I am sure it is down to a large degree of interpretation by both OC Wing and your Regional Comdt, unfortunately.

Hmmmm. Will investigate further. Further as No1-s are only issued on initial course?
Maybe aFg Off on IOT??? Presuming of course substansive is retained lol

It will be interesting to see what u think of the Aco after soso long away

After a decade and a half, I would expect to be starting from square one…

Fifteen years ago I wasn’t old enough to be a cadet.

And still not old enough to understand adult discussion.
If 15 yrs was spent inregulars would still say “start at beginning”?

In fairness to TL, the circumstances before, and during, the 15 year hiatus weren’t really made clear.

That second paragraph of ACP20 is badly written.

Well that was an unnecessarily rude response…

From your initial post: you were a VRT officer 15 years ago, left and are now considering becoming a VRT officer again. Yes, after fifteen years out you should blooming well start from scratch. If someone leaves the RAF and re-joins after three years they have to start from square one, although their prior experience will probably get some recognition from their colleagues/instructors.

However, if you were a VRT officer, joined the regular armed forces, commissioned and served for fifteen years and are now looking at becoming a VRT officer again, then you should still do IOT because you’re becoming a commissioned youth worker, which requires training different to leading/managing troops potentially at war. If you already have a commission then it will probably be ‘converted’ to a VRT commission.

I would be very surprised if you retain substansive FO rank after fifteen years. In fact, that bit of your post implied to me that you weren’t off being a regular officer in the intervening time, because then you would presumably be talking about retaining your regular rank…

I hope that helps. Next time you might want to consider giving more information in your initial post. There is a difference between ‘understanding adult discussion’ and being a psychic.

Transfer into the VR(T) post Regular commissioned service is ultimately at the Regional Commandant’s discretion. I did the same as you, VR(T), Regular for 28 years and now VR(T) again. You have to fill in the normal VR(T) application forms, which I felt a bit odd as there is a focus on school activities, and then you have an interview with your Regional Commandant. You will be appointed as a substantive Fg Off and that will be on your new commissioning scroll. Oddly, you’ll get a new Service number too! Depending on where your Wg have decided you will go, you may get acting Flt Lt or even higher, but that will depend on what you left the Service as.

You won’t have to do OASC, you’ve already done that. Whether you have to do IOT is arguable. As you were a VR(T) before, you should know exactly what you will be doing re youth worker vs a commander of men, so that aspect will probably be covered and the officers’ qualities, Service writing etc etc should be well understood. However, most on here would probably agree that quite a bit has changed in the ACO over the last 15 years, so even if the decision is that you do not have to do IOT, you might choose to anyway to give yourself an update. I didn’t do it and it was never even suggested that I should, but I was a Service Instructor for 9 years before leaving the Service and I had been involved in running a Sqn for quite a while. Before anyone comments, I would have been quite happy to do it if I had to.

We’re still waiting for the man to confirm that that actually is the case…

Based on the man’s attitude and response, I’d want him put through OASC before he came anywhere near my unit…
