RAFAC Heraldic Badges

Big news! I’ve found the RAF museum has a handy guide for everyone!

Looks like they have 44 (Rhodesia) Sqn’s elephant! Served on that Sqn.

A new Squadron badge was awarded, based on the seal of Lobengula, the chief of the Matebele, with an elephant symbolising heavy attacks.

Bet he didn’t have to worry about heraldic stuff!

I could recognise that comet anywhere…

It’s a lovely badge.

Wonderful history and shame they were disbanded due to cuts in reserve squadrons

I’m starting to do some more in-depth briefs for wings that have requested them.

Hopefully a larger-scale one will follow, but the advantage of the slightly smaller audiences is taking the time to get into the weeds with any questions.

Keep an eye out if you’re interested!

I note you’ve got a session with my Wing on Wednesday. :+1:

I caught that list this morning! :eyes:

Looks like mine hasn’t requested one, but what are the chances of tagging along to one in a different wing?

I certainly don’t mind!

Dorset and Wilts WWO arranged this first one.

Def going to be sat in on it - I’m also heavily interested in it from the media and comms side, so if it means I can get a little bit more knowledge behind me to bring back I’ll happily sit in on the session!!

Just want to praise this

Looks like they are fully onboard with getting a badge and understanding the process.

That’s really good to see, thanks.

It almost makes up for this:

That motto is super ironic when you look at how far the badge deviates from an approved one.

I had a really long video call with 273 and they were naturally frustrated, but engaged with it in good faith and wanting to do it all right.

Lots of respect. Clearly an excellent staff team that cares deeply about leading by example.

I’ve not decided which kidney I want to sell on the black market to get our sqn badge done

No one has to get a squadron badge. Your wing or region might have a perfectly good one, depending where you are, and — failing that — there’s the ATC one.

I’ve never seen anything but the ACF badge and / or affiliated regimental badges on their detachment signage. Inventing our own badges in the style of the official ones granted on behalf of the monarch seems to be unique to us.

I hear you.

I’m working on two separate projects in the background:

  1. All units with authorised badges will eventually receive official digital badges and hopefully associated graphics, with just one digitised badge worth the cost of the original — huge savings for units.

  2. Possibly trying to apply for private funding to support units.

  3. Additional options for units that don’t have their own badge, so there are legitimate interim options available to all (some units have never been interested in a bespoke badge, even unauthorised ones).

cough cough. Sea cadets

I think he meant “inventing” as in making them up outside the official process.

I do believe the ACF have a formal process. Theirs are paid for by the county I believe, which led me to ask the question about possible ACC support.
