Nope. I’m not who you think I am.
I’m Brian
I’m….
Not sure! ![]()
I’m being told the system is quicker and smoother than it used to be. The price hasn’t changed, and to be honest when you see the results it’s worth every penny.
Yes, it took me adges to learn the correct term “badge”, sounds wrong but it isn’t.
Glad to hear news is spreading!
It’s been a lot of work, but really rewarding and it’s great to be able to help units get something that is immensely meaningful and will be cherished forever.
Looks like I will be adding to your workload in the very near future!
Can’t wait to add you to the list!
I have a couple of wings asking after a brief to all their units to talk through the history, process for applying etc. I’m expecting a boat load of new enquiries!
That would be very helpful, especially for the application process.
Currently waiting for reply from a previous OC (from about 20 yrs ago) + the Mayor’s office - we use the city coat of arms in our badge - trying to ascertain any previous permission (we were clearly given this) so need to confirm it. Of course, need to work out if it’s suitable!
Unfortunately I can say now that they may have given permission but that’s not how it works.
We could certainly try to nod to it as an element of local and relevant heritage. Perhaps colours. Or using a charge from the arms etc.
If you write to your wing / region and ask them to get in touch, I’m very happy to expand the invite list for my briefing if there’s broad interest. Saves me doing loads.

When you put the application in, The write up is all important. When I did one, the brief we were given was that the badge had to have a local link. If a local authority has given you permission, there should not be a copywrite issue. So it’s going to be down to the historical facts and the relevance of the proposed badge. If it makes sense then you should be OK.
Just to interject because there’s room for confusion here.
Badges cannot contain the heraldry of others, even if they’ve given you explicit permission. This is because these things are property and akin to a signature.
So even if you have local council permission to use their shield and have freedoms of the city, those are interesting references but you cannot use those things within your badge.
They can inspire the creative choices of the inspectorate though.
Same with other badges. It doesn’t matter if a unit OC gave you permission to use the centrepiece or copy the badge entirely, you can’t do it.
See, now that is confusing, how does that affect images shared across multiple heraldries for instance?
Example, the City of Exeter, the University of Exeter and the Devonshire Regiment (and its successor, the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment) all use(d) the same image of Exeter castle in their heraldic badges.
Is that the same thing? Or do you mean you can’t use the whole badge in another badge?
I think he means the latter. The full armorial achievement of the city would include a helm, crest, supporters, a motto, etc. This would not have been reproduced in full within the university or regimental badges.
Similarly, the astral crown and ATC falcon each appear on several approved badges: but you wouldn’t place the full ATC badge (i.e. the falcon, within the circlet, with the astral crown on top and the motto underneath) within the circlet of another badge.
A good example of this is how the MOD badge includes charges from each of the single services (anchor, swords, eagle) without reproducing each of their badges in full.
Just looking at the register, that must be right, because there are loads of images shared between the granted badges and other heraldries

Fair question.
Elements will almost inevitably be shared (or reoccur, even if there is no link between two bodies).
For example, a local unit for whom I have processed an application wanted a tie to the City of Kingston upon Hull. Even though Hull actually has a badge (which shouldn’t be put on a shield), not an armorial achievement, it was still clarified that the squadron could not use the three ducal coronets.
That would be using someone else’s grant.
What they could do is something like a ducal coronet above the waters of the river Hull.
It takes inspiration and meaning from local heraldry, but does not copy it.
I wait to see what is formally proposed by the inspectorate.
Devon County Smallbore Rifle Association also use the Exeter Castle symbol on a red and green background with Semper Fidelis the city’s motto which was adopted long before the U S Marine Corps who now claim it as theirs!
