I love my issue softie, it has an epaulet for my rank slide, it is much lighter than a smock and it is much better at keeping me warm. Not even going to go down the private purchase argument…….. allyness saves lives.
The whole point of a softie jacket is that it is outer wear. The insolation comes from the air trapped between the fibres of the insolation material. either down or a synthetic material. Putting a layer over the insolation compresses the fibres, forcing out the air and reducing the insolation to almost nothing in synthetic jackets. Thus turning a very effective insolation layer into useless layer under a smock. Just saying
Jacket light weight. Is it a jacket or is it a shirt. Nobody knows.
It is called a jacket but worn as a shirt. The jacket is called a smock but the barrack shirt is a shirt. But, when CS95 bas brought in the Jacket Light Weight was the same design as the current MTP barrack shirt.
What ever it was, it was designed to be untucked. This didn’t get past the D&D people as untucked is scruffy and scruffy is not allowed in HM forces. Scruffiness, leads to sloppiness, leads to bad drills, leads to dead soldiers and soldiers are not allowed to be dead and scruffy.
I heard the reversal in the initial policy of wearing the [s]jacket[/s] shirt untucked was due to slump in stable belt sales in the Army. Apparently, this led to much chest-poking at the RSMs’ conference.
Well my Son was kitted out at stores just before Christmas and they were all issued green softies and Buffalos. No mention of MTP softies.
I’ve just had a look at the clothing section of MyRAF and there are no MTP Softies on there. Only Buffalos and Olive Softies.
I’d say carry on as normal until an IBN is issued.
The one good thing about the new MTP23 is that they are more fitted so you don’t look like you’re wearing a spud sack. Maybe that’s why they may allow it to be worn untucked.
One of our SIs yesterday came onto squadron with there jacket tucked out it’s looked so wrong. It just looks unprofessional and basically makes stable belts useless.
