Radio Start Up Guide

Say two Squadrons some 6 miles apart wanted to buy some radio kit so that the cadets on those units could work together on all things comms related and get cadets into comms and earning comms badges.

What would you radio types suggest to make this happen?

NB: Neither unit has any radio “specialists” but the staff are intelligent (on the whole), committed and want their cadets to have this opportunity.

Thanks

What’s the ground like between the two sqns? Are you likely to get line-of-sight transmission?

We went with buying the whole hog - HF base station and a combined VHF/UHF base station. We can contact local sqns on the VHF channels and use the UHF for local comms training to the handhelds which are on the UHF channels.

Have a look at the radio thread which was kicking around a while ago - I thnk I summarised our end solution.

We’ve got a UHF Kenwood TK805, which we’ve use up to 5 mile with good quality signal, although its not hilly around us we do have some buildings in the way. We use a very small mobile aerial (less than 20cm) from a second floor window.

Leeroy,
Give me a call tonight and i will help you out if i can

Won’t get line of sight transmition… Too much built up area between the units.

If you’ve got anymore details on your solution I’d like that please… I can’t find the details on here?

very similiar to the situation with us using TK705s and 805s (although i’m not sure what the recieving Sqns are using)

UHF contact to a neighbouring Sqn 6 miles away
VHF contact to “neighbouring” Sqn 15+ miles away (19miles by car)

we had SERFCA fit a scaffold pole to the side of our hut with a pair of aerials (UHF/VHF) at the top and work from them
the hardest part is having a night on both sqns which is suitable for some chat, our porjects night doesnt necessarily correspond with anyone elses for example…

Another option is to get a field mast, say 26-33’, have it in a tripod mounting in the car park. When you finish for the night, take it down and store it inside

sykesy

I have a mast… I just don’t know enough about radio to tell you what its for?

I will come down to yours if you want. Will have to be in a couple of weeks though. Will bring down our kit so you can have a look over it.

Cheers mate!

Grab a few PRM8020 SA9 sets programmed for VHF.

I think it might be in the archives which I can’t seem to access at work.

Is this the thread you are after?

That’s the badger.
